Military guys: ASVAB advice?

I remember taking it in High school, my guess is its like any other standardized test the Practice Test are generally harder. The real deal was silly easy. Super common sense and logical thinking made a 92list and couldn't get this one Army recruiter to leave me alone. Don't worry just make sure you take your time and think about each question.Leave a comment:

Every branch has helos, and they pretty much all use the same ones also. I think the rate you're looking for is AD, aviation mechanic. From there you can decide if you want to work on jets or helos. Every naval station and flight group has a helo squadron attached to it so you would pretty much have your pick of where you wanted to go. I was in the navy for 6 years and on a carrier, and always had a help squadron with us every time we left port.

I'm sure Navy uses turbine propulsion, but I'd rather get into the heli's. Where I'm from isn't exactly near water, but there's air stations everywhere. I'm just thinking about the future. Plus I just find them more interesting to be honest.
And about the whole 'barter with he recruiter' thing, yes I know this. My uncle is a retired Marine and he was a recruiter for a portion of his 20 years. So I got all the inside info ;)Leave a comment:

You'd probably get a bit more experience in the Navy as a turbine propulsion mechanic.Leave a comment:

Yeah, I was on a different floor, but in the same building. And we got our results before we even left the room. We made our dream sheet at MEPS and went into DEP until we got sent out.
There's some truth to this. Recruiters have more abilities than they reveal. Unfortunately, I didn't take advantage of it because nobody really told me until I got to basic and heard about how others' recruiters helped them out.My buddy took the ASVAB at MEPS. This was for the Navy FYI.
Also, realize that recruiters have alot more options for you then they present. My buddy was lucky enough to have a navy guy offer to call his recruiter if the recruiter tried to play any games. Its like a pawn shop.. you can barter a bit I believeLeave a comment:

I got a 98 on mine. All I did was look over ASVAB For Dummies the night before. Hope you did well. It's kind of weird you don't find out right away. I looked at my scores as soon as I walked out of MEPS.
I was out of school for a year and a half before I took my ASVAB. I sure am glad that I joined though. It's given my family and me opportunities/benefits other careers couldn't.
With my score, I took a "quick ship" job and am now in maintenance. I like it a lot given that I have a mechanical background (working on e30's always helps. Haha.) I'm looking to cross-train when I'm eligible though. We work 12 hour shifts and it kind of burns me out before I can get to the vert or wagon.
Was the ASVAB part of MEPS for you then? I'll end up at MEPS after I select a job and there is a seat open for the schooling.Leave a comment:

My buddy loves music and I taught him how to work on e30s a little. He was also a drug user before he joined (not mj). He loved bootcamp though and is on a good track right now! Seems like it really sharpened his personalityLeave a comment:

I've been out of school for a few years as well. I feel like general knowledge and life experience play a big role in test results.Leave a comment:

Buddy scored a 92, he has been out of school for 3.5 years and he is just a bright guy. In his practice book I scored 90+ on all the practice quizzes... I was just taking it for funLeave a comment:

Thanks for all the advice dudes. The test went pretty well I think. I somewhat ran out of time for some of the algebra section. But I know I did good on everything else, especially the automotive, shop, & mechanical comprehension. Waiting to hear the results by friday

swearing-in comes way after you take the ASVAB- just taking the test does not constitute any kind of commitment. if you don't get the scores you need the first time, you'll know what you need to work on.
that said, it's a standardized multiple-choice test; your past performance on SAT/ACT/etc are probably a good indicator of how you'll do, percentile-wise. (maybe pad a few points on the ASVAB side, because the sample set for SAT is "mostly people on the college career path"...)
I got 98 overall, but it's your 8 line scores and physical profile that are going to go/no-go you for a given MOS. if you already have one picked out you can find out what the req's are at usmilitary.about.com under "enlisted jobs".Leave a comment:
