I am 22 and I have worked or ran my own businesses since I was 12, but in the few times in my life I have not been employed or receiving (somewhat) steady income I have done a few things to keep sane/support myself:
1) Work out
2) Educate myself, not just on scholastic material but rather on things I am interested in, curious about, etc... Knowledge of anything is more valuable than you can imagine.
3) job hunt, go on interview, even if they "arent hiring" interview experience has taught me a ton. I can say with pride that any employer that is hiring and has granted me an interview, said interview has resulted in a position offer.
4) Create your own means of financial survival, no matter how meek. I have sold car parts, shoveled snow, mowed lawns, etc... Money is money, and being self-sufficient is one of the best feelings i the world.
5) Enjoy life; catch up with old friends, explore new opportunities, hobbies, interests, etc.. that you havent had time to in while fully employed/engaged.
6) Don't let yourself ever sit idle or become complacent. This is so important to me, if i ever feel that I am underachieving/dissatisfied it is so hard to get out of a slump and be a go-getter.
In my experience any one of those previously mentioned items, if not all of them will keep your spirits high, and your satisfaction/quality of life high. There is nothing worse than looking back on a day, much less an extended period of time where you cannot feel any sense of accomplishment or pride on what you've done or are doing. Just keep a positive outlook, and be open to anything. You'd be amazed at what past or new connections to people, an interest, or a field can bring you in the future. You're a smart guy with what sounds like some reasonable financial and mental stability if I were in your shoes I would see this more as an opportunity than an obstacle. Overcoming adversity is incredibly gratifying. Just put yourself 'out there' and I'm sure you will be satisfied with the results.
my .02, now back to studying so hopefully all i have just preached will yield me some returns both financially and mentally.
P.S. if all else fails, craigslist handjobs and massages have always proved fruitful for me.

For me, its beer. I love the culture, the diversity, the taste, the uniqueness. I worked at a liquor store over the summer at minimum wage (blows but w/e). Talked to a ton of customers about beer, gave recommendations, shared knowledge I had accrued from research I did on my own. I eventually talked to the right guy, who said he was impressed with my knowledge. Now, after I graduate from college with my marketing degree in a month, I'll be working sales and merchandising for a craft beer distributor for the next 5 years. If all goes right, I'll be hired at the brewery the guy I met is from (Dogfish Head in Delaware)
So do what you love, you never know what doors it may open.

Cheers guys for the comments Joe G you are right and that is my plan keep active and don't let a day go passed with out doing anything. As far as work gose, well made the phone calls to some people I know and the news is not good.
Basically the South Australian government is 30 billion in dept and and not spending a dime on civil infrastructure. So currently my career is on hold. I am starting to look around for other lines of work, was keen maybe get into mining but after some more research, for the first few years the pay is terrible, and the life style will just break my relationship with my girl apart.
So I am not just looking at some supermarket jobs ect ect, to get me by for about 6 months, the word on the street is that there jobs in the civil infrastructure buisness building up and we can expect to see if come pouring out around mid next year.
So in conclusion the government has fucked me and many others, they can't control their spending, and act like a 16 year old girl with her dads mastercard black. Many other people I know are out of the job and are just waiting for next year. Any who ill find something else to keep me going for now, I am trying to put together a Architectural Visualization show case, it is something I do for fun at home and though might as well see if I can make something of it.sigpic

From someone who travels for a living and spends months on end away from home. If you at all like the girl, and she is not 1000% on board with it and you as well it will never work and your making the right decision not going into that line of work.
