    Calling nerds

Hey nerds of r3v, got a quick question. I have heard that there are HDD enclosures that one can buy to turn an old HDD into an external drive. I don't have any experience in the matter so what is a brand/type you recommend?

Go to Newegg.com and sort by best rated and buy one that has good reviews. There really isn't much to them, they are all pretty much the same. Make sure it has the correct connector though and I'd the correct size.

So other than the connector and physical size of HDD they are all the same more or less? Also, do I need to full system restore my HDD or does this device do that somehow?

Is it damaged, or just not part of a computer anymore?

It is still in my old tower, an HP pc circa.. 2004.. I think. Just got a new computer and would like to use the old HDD as portable storage.

If your old hard drive is an IDE one, don't waste your time. That money for the external enclosure is better put into a brand new external hard drive. Enclosures are big and clunky and ugly looking anyway. I would recommend just buying an USB 3.0/2.0 500GB external hard drive for ~$75.

Pretty much, some might be faster than others (USB 3.0 vs. 2.0). But they all do the same thing.

The external enclosure just allows your hdd to be detected by the system, it won't do anything with it. If you want to wipe out the data on the drive and use it as just a big folder, you'll have to format the drive once it's detected in your os.

                I think mine is IDE...

and it's only 160GB. I saw prices for enclosures as low as $10, might be worth it no?

Cale, I wouldn't have expected you to know what Jesus keeps his porn on, but from my experience with him talking to me and all, he has in fact said to me on more than one occasion that he keeps his on a 100mb Zip Drive. He collects picsets from newsgroups via Netscape.

I'd go with just buying a new usb3 external as mentioned above. With what you're looking at buying you'd need a separate power source to power up the drive. For the price the new usb only drives are going for its a much safer bet to just transfer files then stash the original drive for fap material back up. Aint nobody gunna go through an old ass uninstalled disk drive looking for nudies or your collection of old ladies eating without dentures.

If the tower still runs, just install some form of Linux and use it as a NAS or a media server. Use it to backup all of your crap. It's always great to have multiple copies of your crap in multiple places.
