    If you got a good usb hard drive hanging around you can just transfer the data on it and then let the IDE rot in hell.

    An old hard drive is just waiting to fail on you.

    I am not good at spending money wisely and I value data access a lot.

    Or you can do as EtaSax . If you don't mind going through that sort of stuff. Start off with Ubuntu and if it's really that bad DSL or Slackware. By then you have found a new hobby really.
