As cool as that is (dont get me wrong, that IS cool and I can see the level of design/work inolved). I must admit that the whole "modern" living trend is stupid. I can appreciate the incredible use of space some people accomplish but these houses don't feel like a home. They're so minimal, so designed to please everyone else that I couldn't imagine actually living in one and enjoying it. As an example they talk about how the books around the bed are there to create a certain atmosphere... Why aren't the books around the bed for reading? Not a single photo, no random things collected throughout life, just "perfection".

I love to see when people put small spaces to use while keeping some sense of it being an actual living space, not a photo shoot location for a Martha Stuart magazine. Put some family pictures out, some things they enjoy, dont hide it ALL away in favour of shit that's only there to create a certain image for when you have guests over in your cold, sterile looking, modern "house" to sip lattés and gossip about other people. Some people pull this off, most do not.

The Japanese have been living minimalistic forever lol. It all depends on the occupants. We still see homes in magazines with eccentric nic nacs hanging around their homes. This is just what appeals to the demographic nowadays, just like fashion. It all comes and goes.

I for one would LOVE a place like that to START off with, and Ill fill the place and make it my own over time. When its stuff like this they try to make it look edgy clean and flawless for the pics. ;)

Its cool execution of concept thats for sure. I like the old factories and what not converted to lofts and what not. While I can appreciate the modern design for what it is.............. its not my taste at all.

I want to restore and convert an old barn to a home.

But you have to admit that pic looks odd with the angles and the apparent lack of vaulted ceilings visible from the outside vs the ceiling on the inside.

That's pretty awesome. Clutter gives me anxiety so I'm a fan of modern homes, their clean lines and minimalistic interiors. My current house, tho not modern, has very few things that aren't needed inside it.

OK, but now where will the E30 go?!!!

JK. As an architect, I can say that this is a great example of creative re-use. I love to work on spaces like that, where you are constrained by existing conditions. I have done NYC apartments where you are designing down to 1/4" tolerances to fit things in around heating pipes and such.

An existing structure can be a challenge, but it also provides limits that you can really use to create something special. After, there is always a question of personal taste - maybe the modern minimalism isn't everyone's cup of tea, but it is great to be able to hide the clutter really fast - especially in a tight space.

less is more; and I feel this instance is an ideal model of just that.

That would be an awesome vacation house, but I couldn't spend 50%+ of my time there. ONLY because I'd eventually feel trapped in there, especially the bathroom area. It reminds me of an airplane toilet/restroom.

But I would love to be able to spend like a month or two out of the year there.

they have stuff like this in NY in those tiny apartments. it's like a transformer house. me personally I need a back yard to chill in and a garage.
