Anyone Looked into a Franchise Before?

I'm looking to hear your stories, opinions, and experiences with franchises. Some family members and I are looking into one but we've never started one, nor do we know someone who has.

There are obviously pros and cons as with anything in life...

    Pros-

    - Turnkey System/Proven Business Model
    - Support
    - Brand Name
    - Lower Inventory Cost
    - Ongoing R&D
    - Less Risk

    Cons-

    - Less Freedom
    - Royalties
    - High Start Up Costs

My biggest concern with this particular franchise is that the company has only been around for about a year and there are only about 4 franchises at the moment. So the pros of a "proven business model" and a "brand name" don't really apply.

So what experiences have you had with franchises?

I've been wanting to start a chick'fil'a. From one of the operators "$20k start up and the money starts flowing as soon as the "comming soon" sign gets posted. People really think chik'fil'a is a heathier alternative to fast food. best tactic ever"
Guy generates no less than 1.4mil from sun up to sundown. Says he made enough to pay for his daughters degree in the first two months!

I've thought about it before but don't really know that I would want to run places like that. The only way that I would personal see myself getting into something like that would be a very expensive way that I can't afford. Bringing a new place to an area ie Chick'fil'a in michigan or Skyline chilli in Michigan. But I would also want the rights to the region which is where things get expensive.

Start up cash maybe of $20k but there is alot of equipment etc. that can add up quick plus real estate but I guess that is all in how you finance it.

me and the wife were hardcore into thinking about starting a SUBWAY franchise here years ago, met up with a few people, and a few of the other franchise owners told us secretly-- don't do it. So we never went an further with it. About a year later 1 opened up in our town, and went belly up about 1.5 years later................

When I was driving down to Florida I kept seeing signs for Chick-Fil-A but I had never heard of them since we don't have them in Canada. I should've stopped at one!

I agree and I don't think I could see myself running a fast food place either. The franchise I'm looking into isn't a restaurant or in the food industry at all.

This is why I'd really like to hear from some current or past franchise owners.

There is a waiting list for chik-fil-a. And they are very selective about locations and who owns their franchises.

i would too, i don't want any competition. i used to work at mcdonald and the franchiser told me he paid it off in just a year (1.2 millions) because his store was making so much money.

                      This is true.

20k buys you in, they ship all equipment and food. All you do is manage the property and run it.
The waiting list can be jumped. You just need to know the right people ;)

Subway is doing terrible and the entire franchise may go under.

Burger kings sales have improved over 10% since they started delivering.

McDonald's thrives in urban areas but there's a waiting list too.

I'll keep an eye on this thread. Very interested!

My wife's friend owns 6 Subways. She started working there in high school and through college, then bought the store from the owner with some help from family, then slowly built up to owning 5 more stores. She and her husband bust there asses running everything and live on average incomes. I think the stories of becoming a millionaire in a couple years is pretty rare and mostly due to luck. those that have a knack for business and invest wisely and have a little luck and help on their side can do well, but they make up a small minority. Be prepared for very hard work, long hours, little money and a 70% chance of failure.
