None, get the GoPro Hero 3 black. I don't care what ANYONE says, that is the best on the market for those type of use cameras.

To use as a single contained unit on the outside of a moving vehicle?

Nope, GoPro has that market cornered. With good reason, they make a great product.

You can leave go pros on the ocean floor for months and they still work. No brainer mate.

As they said, GoPro is pretty awesome, but for stuff like mountain biking I have been liking what I have seen from the Contour+ 2. All of the main points are comparable to the GoPro, but it has GPS, so it tracks your location, speed, and elevation. Also if you buy this little thing for an iPhone or iTouch, you can stream live video from the camera to your iThing.

The gopro hero 3 is the most powerful actioncam at the moment, but it has some release issues.. freezing, mic crackling, stops recording etc. Firmware hasn't fixed it for everyone. Read any Amazon/ Best Buy 1 star review, or a youtube search. Some have gotten 2-3 replacement units and still have problems. Maybe you'll be lucky though, surely all of them can't be faulty.

The Drift HD ghost looks pretty cool and has a lot of cool features like built in lcd, wifi remote with LED indicator rotatable lense etc... 1080 30fps 720 60fps.

It can't record in 4k or 1080 60fps like the gp3 blk, but most people don't even have hardware to utilize that, and/or aren't interested in slow motion effects.

you can stream to your phone with the new gopro. You can also use your phone as a remote for it...I love mine. My previous gopro sank under my boat during a set and I dove in and got it and it still worked. 2 months later it flew off my hood (bad attachment on my part) hit my windshield, went behind my car and the car behind it ran it over. Went back 4 hours later to look for it and found it 100% intact on the shoulder. I used it for another 5 more months until it got stolen... Good excuse to get the new hero3 which I love.

I know they're tough, but I didn't know that they had the phone feature. I still prefer the Contour for sports like mountain biking just because of the speed and route tracking. I think the GoPro is better for motorsport though.

Why would you need the built in speed and route tracking if you can use your phone though? Seems like an unnecessary feature in the world 80% of people now have a smart phone.

Because the contour can automatically display the tracking info on the video, so that you can watch the video, and in the corner it shows where you are in your route, your elevation, and your speed at that time.

Edit: A couple examples of what I am talking about in here. http://contour.com/stories/introduci...ontour2-camera

Good to know, that's exactly what it would be used for. Going on the roll bar of the Miata for track days.

The one thing we and our drivers have noticed with the GoPros is that the extreme fisheye makes the videos (especially in open cars) kind of hard to watch and not entirely accurate. For example, distances appear farther through a fisheye lens than they are in real life and it becomes much harder to see accurate details of the track for thing like braking/turn-in points. Not impossible, but I know our drivers are going to start looking for something with a narrower field of vision.

Get a GoPro hero 2 HD, will capture anything you want with ease in gorgeous HD.

Hero 3 Blk, it is a good chunk more. Not sure what your Wife is expecting to pay out.

I personally have the Hero 2 HD Motorsport setup. It is amazing and tough as nails. My brother uses one with a head mount for BMX and motorcycle riding. He lost it at over 135mph from the suction cup not fitting to the curve of the helmet well(weird shape). The camera was STILL recording and handled the bounces with ease. The camera arm was undamaged too, some slight scuffing was all that happened to it.

The 3M mounts are unreal, they come off your car with a bit of goo gone.
