    8 years for shooting a man to death... its sad to think this could have been prevented and 3 lives saved if he would have gotten the time he deserved.

            I agree. Many probably won't agree, but IMHO if you kill someone in anything other than what could be construed as an "accident" (forget legal jargon, you either kill someone because you meant to or you did without intending to), you get the death penalty. Sure the legal process should allow a fair trial and all that, but if the outcome is that you are guilty of causing a death due to any sort of malicious intent whatsoever (even if you just meant to cause harm but not kill), you get the chair.
