I want to kick the guy who decided no keyways in the nads. Repeatedly. That goes for the N engines in bmw as well. That and the absolute shit tensioner and guides.

I've replaced 2 engines for the same issues, crank pulleys loosen, BAM! rides over. Timing tools aint cheap either.

The Neon engine is much friendlier to poke at than the Peugeot.

I've seen broken superchargers, headgaskets and of course, rotting plastic in the cooling systems. I've also never seen a german car that the exhaust russ that badly on.

I'd go with a well maintained 53. I will say the 56 is a better drive but, the issues I've seen with the 56 cost a fuckload more than the 53 unless you lunch a gearbox in a 53.

chrono package and if you opt for the navigation. Check to coilpacks for corrosion, the front main seal leaks on ALL of them, only fix is actually replacing it. Other than that, awesome cars. Had an 06 cooper S for a few years. Never gave me a single issue. the 04+ cars have better 1st/2nd gear gearing and more oomph, the later models also pop and burble alot more when letting off the throttle ;)

If you insist on a wrong-wheel-drive compact, the 205 GTI, 405 Mi16, and Integra Type R are more fun.

My Mi16 is the closest you can get to an E30 M3 in a FWD sedan package. Compared to my sister's Mini, the Pug is not only much livlier in terms of handling, but also has a supple suspension that soaks up bumps.

But the Mini is less of a deathtrap, I suppose.

my dad's got an 05 cooper s. super fun to drive but damn you can't hide the weight. they're heavy. thanks bmw. my dad's hasen't had any problems yet but my friend's uncle raced them and apparently they always break when you drive them hard consistently. throttle response terrible. Road trips are ok as long as you like sorta rough rides. But they its soooo fun to blast through the gears in no doubt
