My first time was ruined because there were little Mosquitos stuck to the ceiling and falling down on the table every minute or so. We left the restaurant and it sort of psychologically ruined me from eating kbbq. This was like 5 years ago. I recently tried it again and I'm a fan.
It's hard to categorize Indonesian and malaysian since its so varied because of their location as a trade hub, colonization and the cultures that immigrants have brought to those countries. Check out CNNgo for info and pictures of their food. It's ranked high on their lists.
Same thing with India, with their different ethnic groups and religions, its hard to lump them all together, for instance Punjabi food is awesome, but I'm not the biggest fan of the Hindu vegetarian dishes.
Korean food is bland to me, and too many pickled veggies, I mean I know cause of their latitude you aren't going to be growing spices and tropical fruit. But they do work well with what they have. The only Korean dish I don't ever mind eating is bulgogi. I don't understand the fascination with all these Korean BBQ places, Japanese BBQ and Yinkiniku I think is a lot better, even though it does have Korean roots, stuff taste just like bulgogi. But yakatori is seriously where its at.
Aahhh rambling on..
CLIFFS- if I had to eat East Asian food right now
1. Indian; tandoori, naan, tikka masala, those giant rolled taco looking things with some mango chutney.
2. Japanese; Toro, udon, croquettes,
3. Indonesian, fried rice, satay, maybe some curry
4. Thai; choo chee salmon, moo ping and papaya salad, maybe a cup of tom yum.
5 would be a toss up, maybe that spicyass napalese curry, Mongolian hot pot or some Viet pho, and one of their sandwiches.
Those are my top 5ish then the other southeast Asian countries then American Chinese food, real Chinese food is better than Southeast Asia besides Thai. I put Korean food above Filipino which would be last on my list.
