Yay I got a job! Kinda...

So my mom's friend kinda gave me a job over break (this week) She has me transcribing all her dissertation interview tapes to word files.

nbd right? I'm thinking easy cash that I can blow over break.

Pop the first tape in and my ears are greeted with the worst excuse for English in the form of heavy Kenyan accents and terrible grammar. Her exact words: "I want you to type literally everything, including pauses and when they say 'umm' or when they stutter"

You would think as a Kenyan and being exposed to the accents all my life that it would make the job that much easier but it really doesn't...

Don't get me wrong, I am no whiner and I do appreciate the opportunity to get paid to do this, especially since I'm jobless, but it is sooo repetitive and time consuming

I finished 3 tapes so far and all together the tapes average 13 minutes. Gonna finish this last one before heading to bed and then I have 3 more plus an additional 4 if I agree to them

These are averaging 5 pages single spaced, ~2,500 words

Anyone ever do work like this?

You could do what my friend did and get a talk-to-text program like Dragon and play the tape and plug it into your computer so it'll type everything out for you. All you have to do is put the tape in, push play, and wait for it to end.

Two things: good talk-to-text software (like Dragon) is $100+, and with the thick accent you're not even sure what kind of results you'll get. He also has to create dialogue with two speakers and have all the pauses, um's, and stutters, so even if the program can correctly convert the audio there is still a lot of editing to do.

Its a tough gig. When I was in undergrad we had a "brilliant" visiting prof from China who was trying to get his stuff published while he was over here in the states. It was my job to take all his research that he was submitting for publication and translate it from Engrish in to English. By doing so this "brilliant" prof sounded less like the guy who cooked my egg roll last night. It was also a work from home assignment, so I was liberal with the billing hours I sent back to my University.

haha I can imagine just how much fun that must have been. Had I known what I was getting in to, I would have laid down an hourly rate lol
