Anyone have any experience taking cross-country journeys by Amtrak? I'm planning a visit to Southern California and my girlfriend and I are planning on taking the train from Little Rock, AR. We'd book sleeping arrangements on the train. I've always loved trains and I think that this might be fun. What does R3v think?

MUCH MUCH CHEAPER TO FLY Than get a sleeper cabin on a Amtrak !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I used to take the train between where I live in MT to where I used to live in S MI. Train stations are both about 15 mins from the house, and that routing takes only a couple of hours longer than driving it straight through with only a couple of 1/2 hour power naps. Train 35 hours, driving 31-32 in good weather an with train your not 110% exhausted when you get there, and the cost for 1 person was less for a coach fare than fuel to drive it.
All that said its not a bad way to travel if you have the time to devote to the journey. The sleeper cabins are very small I bet you have a closet in your home that is at least twice the size of the cabin and the communal showers on the bottom level are "interesting" if you get the cheap bunks. When you go for meals to the dining car you will not have a table to your self you will sit with other people, which can be fun or annoying depending on the luck of your draw we have had it both ways. The food is not good but its not that bad either, The nice thing is you can bring a lot of your own snacks and beverages with you and so on and you will likely meet some interesting people .
Just a quick look, shows your going to be on the shortest trip for 53ish hours, Leaves Little rock at 330am though, and a base fare for 2 of 365 bucks Sleeping accommodation are are going to be an additional 450ish for 2 bunks only or 1050 with your own bath room, this is for each direction.
All in all its worth doing once for the experience I normally just did the Coach seat and ate 1 meal a day in the dining car and just enjoyed the scenery, as for my normal trip the sleeper car was just not worth the extra money. I have less time and bit more money these days so I mostly take the Grey Hound with wings anymore when I have to get someplace.Originally posted by FusionIf a car is the epitome of freedom, than an electric car is house arrest with your wife titty fucking your next door neighbor.

I did it when I brought my 318is from Va to FL. I had a great time. It is slow but with the cognac, a "new car" on the train with me AND a beautiful woman sitting in the next row. She had her own business.
Want to wager a guess?! She owned a modeling agency that worked with auto affliated industries. We drank, looked at her "employee" photo shots and talked about cars.
So yeah, big fan of the train. AS long as I'm in no hurry.
