He likes to throw basketballs at basketball players? He calls people naughty names? Sounds like what happens on a basketball court.

He already went through a disciplinary process, and now because a video gets leaked and someone else gets embarrassed he gets fired. Sounds like a payday to me.

Obviously the only reason he was fired was due to public outcry over the leaked video. The school was well aware of what was happening and did not feel as though it was a fire-able offense. So yes, I do believe due to that fact his termination was unjust.

HOWEVER - I played sports (football and wresting) at extremely high levels, including semi-pro ball. I have had some of the strictest coaches in the country (according to a few articles) and never was treated this way. Was I yelled at? Constantly. I dont think thats the issue here. The physical side of it is, in my eyes, wrong. There is just no need, NOTHING good can come from it.

In fact - a very close friend of mine who had a semi legit shot of being paid to play football had his career ended in a similair situation. He was blind-sided by our coach which tore his MCL, ACL and broke his knee cap. Obviously this was not the intent of the hit, but thats the result. So like I said, I dont see any GOOD consequence of this coaching style, but sure have seen the bad. My buddy was crushed more so emotionally that his career was over than the physical pain.

This is why everyone is in an uproar over the video. I listen to Sports radio all day since I don't have satellite in my car, and listening to Mike & Mike, Colin Cowherd, SVP, etc. and the above is the recurring theme. You get offended by rough language? Tough, grow up. (Watch Alec Baldwin in GlenGarry Glen Ross if you need a reminder to how rough language can motivate). You throw a basketball at a kid or grab them once? Maybe let it slide. You do the physical stuff constantly? FU go home power hungry prick.

If it were a contact sport I feel this would be totally different but since it's basketball everyone freaks out. My hockey coach used to body check the shit out of us in drills, break a stick at least every practice (and throw the pieces at us) and shoot pucks at us on occasion if we kept messing up and nobody thought a thing of it, even the parents. Maybe a few of the moms didn't like it. But we were damn good and won multiple state championships and he's produced many junior, semi-pro and NHL players. I guess everyone is different.

bunch of tough guys in here..... lets see how you respond when a coach treats your children like that, or even a fraction of that behavior is exhibited towards your children. It's unacceptable, that's all.
Anyone read the WHOLE story? There's more to this than just the video. This isn't the first time he has acted this way towards kids, he was warned, put on probation, warned again. Should have been fired long ago instead of allowed to continue. Abuse is abuse. Just because it isn't the magnitude of Penn State's incidents, doesn't make it ok to abuse students you are paid to guide, nurture and shape.
Than being said, fans are assholes. Had this been the coach of a final 4 team, it wouldn't have been a big deal, or would have been swept under the carpet, much like the atrocities at Penn State.

it's no some much a bunch of tough guys, I see where you are coming from as well. But in my years of being on teams the ones where the coach was more like rutgers coach did far better than the teams where the coach was a softie for the lack of a better term.

                  this

some people are really trying to make their e-penis pretty big in this thread. coaches get mad, but shoving people and throwing basketballs at people is honestly unacceptable. you cant do that as a coach and you cant call students waffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffless and fucking fairy's. for the people that think this isnt bad, and have had coaches say worse things, and calling these people pussies because of it, calm your e-boner and be real for 2 seconds.

In 15 years, there will be no more contact sports, and every team will win the Championship, three times a year. Every player will get the MVP award, and they will all get twitter-tape parades, while seat-belted and fully suited up with HANS devices and helmets in the back seat of a padded, non-convertible vehicle, with 15 airbags. That has a max speed of 15MPH.

                          I'll just leave this here

Two Rutgers basketball players on Mike Rice's team say the fired coach wasn't the abusive tyrant he appears to be on a widely viewed video that ultimately cost him his job.
What it feels like owning an e30:

                          88 325 S50 swap in progress
                          90 325ix

This is what people should really be talking about. My father works as a biology professor for Rutgers and is their faculty NCAA representative, so he's got more of the story than most people do. The problem is in fact that this is essentially a coverup from the top down. The president of the university knew about this video and the coaches' actions since before he was suspended in December. The president and in turn the athletic director (who it appears was following orders from the president) decided to cover this up for as long as possible.

From what is coming out, the Rutgers President may be involved in other coverups as well as prejudice and discrimination against minority students and employees. Right now there is a group of professors on campus that are drafting a letter asking for the President's resignation, which will be submitted to the Board of Trustees by the end of the week.

In the end, Mike Rice getting fired now rather than in December is a slip up from the original plan to cover it all up. Word circulating is that the video comes from someone that was an assistant to the basketball team who was fired. He went to the university before being fired and gave them the footage. Once he got fired (in true NJ fashion), he demanded a couple million $'s to keep quiet, when the university didn't pay, he went public, and here we are.

I've lived in NJ my whole life, and all I can say is, nobody does a coverup and then scandal better!

I played contact sports. I don't see the problem. How is this abuse?

If the coach hit players and broke ribs, they got black eyes or in anyway injured them so that they could not play I would agree there is a problem. Same if he was slapping players in the face.

I've shoved people harder while riding the Tokyo Metro and train system than this guy did.
