    momofukus down near stuyvesant. delicious.

the Met is basically free.99. the ticket prices say 'suggested $10'. you can walk in and say two tickets for .02. it is an amazing museum and you will never see everything you want to in one day! other museums include the MOMA, the Guggenheim, American Museum of Natural History, American Folk Art Museum.. culture is abundant.

also, you must walk Central Park and admire the 19th century landscaping efforts of Daniel Burnham and crew.

go for a walk on the highline, down by the meatpacking district (southwest edge). it's another nice reappropriation of old (railroad track) for new.

also, you can take a ferry from the southern most point of the island to governor's island. it's a cool little day trip.

maybe head across the brooklyn bridge and enjoy the amazing food and brewery options in brooklyn? as well as some hipster watching, which should prove entertaining.

of course there is times square, the museum of sex (lol), and building tours. go see rockafeller center if it's a clear day and go to the top. it costs a little money but the view is worth it, specially around sunrise or sunset. also the flatiron building, the chrysler building, empire state, st. patricks cathedral.. endless architecture.

i would make it a point of feeling out every little 'town'.. little italy, chinatown, korea town, chelsea, soho, noho, hells kitchen, greenwich village, midtown, upper east side, harlem.. every place has a different feel. new york city is amazing.

buy a metro pass for $20 and enjoy the trains. i've never been bothered walking around new york at night, by myself, and i'm not a big dude. just be smart and walk with confidence.

I was hoping for less obvious suggestions. The kind of stuff that doesn't show up in tourist guides.

The museums are awesome and lots of them are basically free (suggested donation). Don't let them guilt you into paying $75 for your family to get in when the guy next to you is paying $1. Of course, feel free to donate if you like.

Other than that I would say stay away from the main tourist spots. Go see them if you have to just to say you did. Instead, go to a walk able area of the city with a lot to see/do/eat. Pick a neighborhood that you think you will like and go there. They are all a little different.

                        - Lower East Side has a lot of young folks, some nice places to eat and a few shops. Williamsburg is a better option if you are looking for that kind of stuff.
                        - Soho is full of really high end small boutiques that have things your wife looks at in magazines but can't find at home. It's also a really beautiful area because the buildings are old and well preserved. I actually recommend Dumbo (in Brooklyn) instead. It has a similar vibe but less crowded with tourists. It's also right by a brand new and pretty spectacular park right underneath the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges. One of the oldest carousels in the states is there and running for the kids. you can also visit some world famous Vlad photo shoot locations.
                        - West Village has some great music spots and bars. Also some neat architecture.

I could go on and on. If you let me know more of what you would like to see/do/eat or what neighborhood you want to visit I can definitely give you some recommendations.

We are open to basically anything. We will be staying within a block of Union Square park, so we have a good location.

I know Mon/Tue for lunch we are doing Food tours in Chelsea/Greenwich and Wednesday night going to a Broadway show.

We would like to spend a full day in Brooklyn, so that looks like either Sunday or Thursday. As in take a cab over, hit a cool breakfast spot, walk around check out some shops and street food, find a pub (Bierkraft any good?) for lunch, some more sight seeing, the Brooklyn bridge, grab a dinner, cab back to where we are staying.

lol word. I was walking in this area many years ago because my friend lived in Brooklyn Heights, and Vlad did a photoshoot a few months later. I remember eating at this brunch place that was pretty expensive located on a cobblestoned street. I forgot what it was called though.

Since you aren't too far from it, Momofuku is not to be missed. Get a big bowl of ramen or the cold spicy noodles (fucking amazing). But no matter what, even if you think you are going to hurl from how much you've eaten, you HAVE to get the pork buns.

In Brooklyn, you may want to stay in the Downtown/Dumbo area since you want to use a cab to get there and home and also want to see the bridge.

Here's where I would take you based on what you've said you want to do:
                              - Go to Colonie for brunch. I've only been for dinner but that has been great every time. It's on Atlantic avenue right off the higheay and a yellow cab could take you there easily. (since we're on the subject, i recommend the subway instead. It's cheap and relatively easy. especially so with a smart phone since the map apps give train directions).
                              - Check out some of the local shops south of Atlantic on court street and the surrounding blocks.
                              - Walk from there to the Brooklyn bridge park by heading up Henry street or next one east (but not court). This will take you through a very beautiful neighborhood on the way. Sycamore lined streets and old carriage houses which now cost millions. Lots of wedding pics taken in this area.
                              - if you are hungry, stop at the felafel spot on Henry just north of Hotel St. George. Last time I was there the felafel pitas were $3.50 (a steal in NYC) and were probably the best ones I've had.
                              - from there you are only a few blocks from the bridge. Go to the north side and down to the park instead of the stupid pier on the south side. There is also a new park on the south side, but I still say north is best. It will also lead you right to Dumbo where you can check out more cool shops and galleries. There are some pubs/bars to take a load off in as well.
                              - take the F train a few stops back to eat at Prime Meats for dinner. You won't be disappointed.
                              - if you aren't beat (or sick of my recommendations) get a cocktail at Henry Public which is only a block from where you started at Colonie. Great Prohibition era drinks with a cool atmosphere.

And that concludes Tom's tour of Downtown Brooklyn...

Every other neighborhood has the same amount of stuff to offer. It's just hard to go to a lot of them in one day unless you want to spend a lot of time on the train or money on cabs. Remember that you can't really find yellow cabs in a lot of Brooklyn, so people take private car services.
