1972 Volvo 1800es finally out of storage!

Dad has owned this for the past 20 years. The last 15 years it has been in storage. Pulled it out today to get it running and back on the road. Needs a good wash, but is looking great. Fuel pump needs to be rebuilt but everything else looks good. It had a brand new engine installed before going into storage.

I guess considering it is a 2 door sports wagon it probably qualifies as a "shooting brake".

I would have gone for the 1800is, but to each his own.

I always thought this was a really cool-looking car, and obviously the coolest Volvo by a lot more than a mile. We see some P1800 race cars occasionally and it's a refreshing change from the British hordes.

Awesome car. Funnily enough they have the same brake booster as found on a 2002Tii.

It reminded me of the fifth element taxi cab. It should in the next mad max movie, if their is a next one. I look up, up coming movie making and tell them you got nice old classic they can use. Might get your car restored for free, worth a shot :D

I was carted around as an infant in a p1800, when I wasn't being carted around in a vette.

Very cool. I finally saw a bunch of these in person at the IPD bbq meet/show in Portland last weekend and these definitely look cooler and more like a shooting brake in person.

                            From wikipedia:

In 1972 came the last model, the 1800ES, a coupé station wagon with an all-glass tailgate, sometimes described as a shooting-brake. The final design was chosen after two prototypes had been built by Sergio Coggiola and Pietro Frua. Frua's very unusual looking prototype, Raketen ("the Rocket", on the right), currently resides in the Volvo Museum. Both Italian prototypes were considered too futuristic, and instead in-house designer Jan Wilsgaard's proposal was accepted.[5] The ES engine was downgraded to 125 bhp (92 kW) by reducing the compression ratio with a thicker head gasket (engine variant B20F); although maximum power was slightly down the engine was less "peaky" and the car's on-the-road performance was actually improved.

The ES's rear backrest folded down to create a long flat loading area. As an alternative to the usual four-speed plus overdrive manual transmission, a Borg-Warner three-speed automatic was available in the 1800ES.[6] With stricter American safety and emissions standards looming for 1974, Volvo did not see fit to spend the considerable amount that would be necessary to redesign the small-volume 1800 ES.[5] Only 8,077 examples of the ES were built in its two model years.

Plaster models scale 1:10 based on Pelle Petterson prototyping used by Volvo design department from 1957 onward for considering design updates (estate)
                            Influence

The all-glass rear hatch of the ES-model (which got it the German nickname Schneewittchensarg - Snow White's Coffin) proved to be very popular with future Volvo-designers. A similar design was used on the Volvo 480, and on multiple concept cars. The Volvo C30 also uses this design.

I have always wanted to get my hand on an old Volvo P1800 to play with, love that front end.
