I prefer big old American made ones. I have a 70 yr old columbian that is nice and a newer wilton bullet vise. Check Craigslist for old ones.

^Yep. I would suggest scouring CL for a 40-50's made in the USA model that you can replace the grip surfaces on. You can spend $200 on a POS China made, pot metal hunk of garbage that will likely break when tightening down, or 50-100 + some aircraft stripper, some heavy duty paint, and a new set of surfaces and have a vice you will give your kids.

Also check out old Record vices from England. Great quality and replacement parts still available.

If new then buy a Wilton

I would go about it as mentioned above, Old US made from a yard/estate sale or CL and restore it a bit and for less than a 150 you have something that will last longer than your life time

My workhorse is a Rigid F-60 (with swivel base).

MSRP is about $460 amazon frequently has it for $360. Its German made (and stamped). The vise is forged steel which is different from the old american cast iron vises. Rigid claims the forged steel design is significantly stronger then the cast iron vises.

It opens wide as shit, and I have used it as a "press" multiple times to press in/out diff mount bushings, control arm bushings, etc.

It is hands down my favorite tool in my garage, I dont know how I ever lived without one.
