Quick air compressor advice

I've been going back and forth between wanting an electric impact vs air driven impact and I think I'm going to go air. Seems cheaper in the long run especially since you just buy whatever $30 tool you want and hook it up. No buying different brands and different batteries etc.

This means I would want to get a compressor that is worth a damn and will allow me to use the impact, or ratchet without problem for e30 suspension, getting stubborn bolts off, and overall convenience of a powered ratchet.

Also, light painting or other things would be nice, but I'm definitely not looking to use a grinder...

How does this one look? One thing I read is that you definitely want 220v rather than 120v, does this still apply for what I'm trying to accomplish?

That's the one I have, does everything I need for the cars. Got it for like 40 bucks. If it's cheap, go for it but if buying new I would save up for something better.

You want a belt drive compressor...direct drive is miserable

No. if you're going to use it do not buy oiless. they do die early. They are super loud and annoying.

I'd suggest finding an oiled setup of fthe same size or better CFM. You'll need more air for constant work.

I have a 35gal husky oiless and use probably once or twice a year. I bought a craftsman cordless impact and it's a BEAST! 250ftlbs is plenty for whatever I use it on. It takes off wheels, diff bolts, subframes... whatever it'll do it and it's soooo conveinient. No cords or hoses getting in the way. less noise/clutter. Best part is I take it to the junkyards and my sawzall and they share batteries and do work! A lot cheaper than a decent reliable air comp and gun.

Damn, now you guys have me flip flopping haha, I was seriously going to go electric cordless but getting a decent one of those is around $100-$200 (more for the badass ones!), then that doesn't count if I want another tool... After hitting CL it seemed like the choice was obvious, so I need oiled, and something with a slightly higher CFM.

What's your budget?
Compressors are great and as long as you get a decent reliable one you'll be ok.

Now this is just me but, if you don't have say more than $400 to spend on a good setup. I would hold out until I could save some more. There's nothing wrong with turning a few wrenches for a while longer lol.

I bought my 1/8" and 1/2' impacts with a drill and sawzall all for $225 at sears. that's with one large Nicad and 2 Lithium batteries. The Nicad does work!

Unless you plan on running a bunch of different air tools, don't worry about getting a compressor right now.

Do you have 220V available in your garage?
Look at the specs on the tools you want to use, then figure out if that compressor will work for you.

220v, Oil Lube, and buy a Quincy or not at all

Minimum would be 20 gallon tank with at least 2 hp, preferably more. One guy, one gun, this works. You can even spray a little paint.
It is what I started with. I have a half inch Milwaukee Battery impact, which works great. Even that is under powered at times. Gotta break out the air. Or a piece of pipe.
Most the time I find myself just using the regular hand tools, and not even breaking out the others.

Based on your pic, I would highly suggest battery powered tools. You'll thank me later for the convenience and simplicity. no having to constantly oil, run hose, and all the other stuff compressors need.

Check out the craftsman 1/2' impact or the milwaukee stuff...
