    Knee injury

How many of you have a busted up knee?

I did some damage to the MCL in both my knees yesterday and am really psyching myself out. I really don't want to be the guy cruising around in a leg brace but damn this is some painful stuff!

What do you guys do for pain and stabilization?

Corbin fucked his knee so bad it damaged his ACL. You know of him in his CF brace since last Christmas.

My knee creaks after an 30mins of hard riding. No idea what it is. Hurts like a mofo when it does. Used to ride roadbikes a lot when I was younger.

Were there any popping noises or a shift laterally in your knee? Can you extend it fully?

My physio said not to use strapping unless it was kinesio tape. It does feel a whole lot more stable using this compared to strapping it, but I think that's because you aren't aware/ constantly restricted in your movement. I'd say for now if can avoid using it. strap it fairly tight and firm. Just look up MCL knee taping/ strapping on youtube for getting it stable for the time being. Unfortunately pain is inevitable, take your strongest pain meds.

I ruptured my ACL and tore three quarters of the meniscus underneath my knee (had to be removed) last April. I started rehab 2 days after the surgery, 4 times a week for 2 hours for 3 months, I've been running since then and been training lightly since late May and I'm back to playing football in September.

Keeping your muscles active and strong is huge for your recovery. If you start to neglect them your knee will become super weak.

          After getting movement back to my knee and getting walking down my regime was;
Flat bed leg raises > with weights then
Bike machine for 10 minutes 3 sets then
Seated leg raises > with weights then
Squats against a wall > with weights then
Squats without a wall > then with weights then
Stair machine > intense stair machine
lunges and stair climbs > with ankle weights
And weight machine from seated leg raises
I've started cycling in the last few weeks as well, I can finally see the end of this!
          Tim.

And you are the new knee expert of R3V.

I can extend both legs fully after some struggle. The real pain is if there is a twisting motion or pivoting. Since i was a dumbass and didn't sit down to ice or relax after the injury i think i just inflamed things more. Spent all of yesterday laying around with ice on it. Right knee is certainly more mobile than the left so thats a plus. Will try taping it for work today then go from there.

Pretty sure i never would have had this problem in my younger 20's. just worried at how much this is going to effect my mountain biking, backpacking, skiing, and other activities.

I had a piece of my medial meniscus removed after a few years of knee pain, when it finally tore enough to flip into the joint and keep me from straightening my knee all the way. Was out of work for about 5 weeks, after the surgery I was back on it(barely) after about 4 days. I kneeled down bleeding the brakes on my E30, my fiance was pumping the pedal, I went to stand back up and *crunch*, couldn't walk on my left leg and couldn't straighten it more than halfway. Turns out its from an old injury from BMX.

After having ACL reconstructive surgery back in '97 and continuing to skate for years after.

Your best let that ish heal up for the next 2 to 6 weeks then work on building up all the muscles in your leg to keep your knee in place. Then if you slam or bail hard get ready for it to hurt.

                rinse and repeat forever.

Just be sensible about it hey! keep it iced and raised when you can and you should be right :D A team mate of mine had a grade 2 MCL sprain. He was playing again 4 weeks later so I gather it's fairly up to how your body reacts to injury for recovery time. Definitely get them checked out after the swelling has gone down even if they feel decent. Especially with your lifestyle! You don't want to go out and then do serious damage cause they didn't heal properly, and be out of action for 6+ months! $30 now beats $4000 later

                        Go see a doctor.
It is your only option. If you have messed something up, you may not know it until you move a certain way. Getting it checked will let you know just how bad it is and whether you need any surgery/ rehab. Im telling you, I wish I had done these things when I was younger. My knees and ankles are shot, and they have in turn strained my back due to weakness. If you don't get it checked you won't find out the full extent of damage until its too late and you are old.
                        Yours truly,

Broke my kneecap in half about 2-3mm when I was 15. Luckily since I was young I didn't need surgery or screws in my knee. 6-8 weeks in a straight brace day and night and I was 95%+ healed.
Sadly I have pain in that knee when it's cold or when doing strenuous activity :/ most likely arthritis in my future says the doc

Yea drs appointment is set up for the morning. The years of skateboarding and general tom foolery are showing their signs now. I was hoping a day of rest and icing was going to at least help me rule out any major injury but the pain is just as bad now. No need to be a tough guy and risk more permanent damage I guess....

Step 1 is to definitely see a doctor! I would be icing it as we speak, keep that swelling down.

Ask him about a unit called game ready http://www.gameready.com/rehabilitation-equipment

This system not only applies super cold treatment it also applies pressure on and off. Hopefully you have insurance and this will cover it, if you were local I would let you borrow it, they are fucking expensive to buy.

I used this when I hurt my knee 10 years ago and has never bothered me once since then. If you don't need surgery all you can really do is ice it, relax and rehab.
