    Any amateur astronomers?

Been fascinated with the night sky for years, but never wanted to drop cash on any optics (past binoculars).

Well my 5 year anniversary is coming up with my Wife, and she asked me if there's anything I've been wanting but wouldn't normally buy.

This leaves me considering a telescope. I have wanted one for years, but could never justify the cost.

I'm looking for tips on older used models that hold up well. The cheaper the better, and I know it helps to know someone who has knowledge in the field. Most of the time you can find an older unit for a very low cost that is actually better than the cheaper new units. (At least this holds true in other hobbies)

    School me, please.

I've been in the same boat for a few years. I actually rented some books at the library and they are very informative on equipment and first timers. Plus it's free, reliable knowledge.

As for equipment, if you do not have binoculars yet from what I real it's one of the best cheap upgrades to the naked eye. You see 10x more or something craZy like that.

    In for the answers aswell

I've sort of been looking for a telescope I can attach my DSLR to. What I typically do if I find one that looks like it might be of use, I just google the model and see what comes up.
