Applying for a job within the same company

I'm not sure of a good way to approach this. I like the company I work for, but don't like my job at the company. They are expanding in other departments and 2 of the job openings in particular are what I actually wanted to get into after college.

Any ideas how to approach this so I don't burn my current job by applying in a different department?

    Current ideas:
Just apply online and see what happens?
Talk the manager of the other department I'm trying to get into?

If you already work for the company, the best thing to do is talk to the dept. manager about the position you want to switch to. Wouldn't hurt to speak to your personal manager about it as well

I don't see a problem with wanting to "increase your skills and make yourself a more valuable member of the team."
