    Help with my shinanigans

Throwing a party at my college sanctioned apartment, problem is almost all parties get busted because people come in and out and the door is left open when the music is blasting.
Thought of somehow wiring something that stops the music when the door is opened.
Any idea of how one would go about this? I can't do any excessive drilling and the door is metal.

Initial idea was using one of those alley-way motion detectors that turn on the lights somehow.

What if you just told people to close the door? Or used some sport of spring so the door closes when it isn't being pushed open? I've never had a problem throwing a party in an apartment, granted it wasn't on campus and most of my friends are competent enough to close doors behind them.

Even that 1 second that the door is open the music escapes - any authority potentially walking by will hear it. It closes automatically to begin with

If you could accomplish it without shocking anyone, maybe you can have the speakers wired through the door and have it set up so the circuit is complete when the doors are closed but once the door opens, it breaks the circuit, cutting power to the speakers?

Run two wires, one to the door latch and one to the catch/striker plate. Then run these to a battery and a relay. Use the contacts in the relay to turn on and off either the signal going into the stereo (easy if you are playing music off an iPod or something) or use it to switch the speakers on and off directly. You would only need to switch one of the pair of the speaker wires. I.E. - Only the negative wire, but on all speaker. Probably want to use a relay for each speaker.

When the door is closed, the latch is touching the striker plate and turns on the relay. When the door is opened, it shuts the relay off and kills the music.

You could also tape a wire to the hinged edge of the door, then tape another wire on the door frame opposite the first wire. When the door is closed, they will be touching, but once opened, they will not. Maybe use some aluminum foil on one side to make the contact area bigger and easier for the wires to contact.

The music turning off for a second every hour (just for someone to smoke) is better than RA breaking in and breaking it up

In my experiences with college aged parties, the door will be opening every 5 minutes (smoke breaks, guys pissing, people coming and going, couples fighting, sluts....slutting)

I would just keep the music lower than normal, tell everyone to not open the door unless they REALLY need to, and keep the music in another room. Also, bribe cops with beer. .... good luck.
