i see these a lot for sale too. mostly they are brought in on the grey market, refurbished and resold here in the usa. i have never used on personally, but they seem quite small. as long as you don't have any big jobs to do, they should be fine. as i mentioned earlier, try to buy one with a loader. you won't regret it, i promise.sigpic

You're really going to have about a million choices in that 5k bracket to be able to get everything you want (within reason), I wouldn't even bother looking at 8Ns as you could easily find something a lot more modern for the same as you'd pay for a 8N. I wouldn't buy anything without a 3pt hitch and a loader depending how much land you've bought, they will certainly pay for themselves the first time you need to do any work.
Massey 135/165's might be a bit big for what you want but still area nice little machine with lots of a parts available if you want to refresh it. I'd stick to stuff that is name brand from either the US or Europe, and Kubota you'll be onto a good thing. www.ironsearch.com would be a good place to start seeing what dealers around you are asking for machines.Comment

i have a mitsubishi MTE2000D that is a great little tractor (24hp 4wd with FEL),been using it for last 10 yrs with no issues to brushhog ,grade and move dirt and most recently to split firewood (3pt splitter) ,dont know how i made it without it now and wish i purchased it sooner ...Angus

Pricing for these seem all over the map. Maybe it's just around here. People asking 3-4k for basically garden tractors. Nothing decent right now, so I'll have to keep looking.
What really confuses me is the old vs newer pricing. Most of the older kubotas around here are well out of my price range ($9k+) and all seem to have over 1000 hours. There's even some dude with a clapped out 80's one with 7000 hours that wants 7.5k. Meanwhile there are several with under 100 hours that are almost new (05-09) priced at a little over 10k. I mean I knew they held their value but really?
It seems like if you want anything green or orange you need at least 7k.Comment

well, for one thing, 1000 hours for a tractor is nothing. thats like 30,000 miles on a car. 7000 hours is another story, but then it could have been taken care of and had the engine rebuilt. i would avoid a tractor with that high of hours.
if orange and green are out of your price range, buy a yanmar or something of similiar quality. yanmar is a really good tractor without the price tag. just get 3 point hitch and a loader. 4wd if you can fit it in your budget. try to get something close to 25hp range or a little bigger. this is a good size that will handle most hobbyist jobs.
in addition to the other advice listed in this thread, also avoid a tractor with turf tires unless you only plan to mow your lawn with it. they are fucking worthless if you plan to actually use the tractor for anything it was really intended to do.
the bush hog appears to be 5 footer so that puts the horsepower range in the mid twenties. the hood is the exactly the same as my tractor. they made a lot of similiar models during this time. it is certainly an L2x5 something or other. it appears to have a 3 cylinder engine. all kubotas are diesels. the likely models are L235, L245, or L275.(maybe L225) as i mentioned previously before seeing the photo, i think it is an l245 because that is the most common model of this range. that is the oldest of the those listed above. the L235/275 would be a better tractor because it would be newer and it would have better hydraulics among other things. i parted a 235/275 a few years ago and i have lots of extra parts laying around.
since this tractor is 2wd, this means the steering is manual. as i mentioned previously, before it is moved, the steering box will need to be removed, the water drained out, and new seals/lube(probably bearings) put on. likely the bearings in the box are shot because it has been sitting outside. there is a recirculating ball system in there. if you try to steer it with bad bearings you will fuck up those metal tubes that return the balls back into the helix. they don't make them anymore, so you will have to try to find a used box somewhere and that is pretty much impossible to do. this is the weak spot on this tractor.
while you are at it, drain the fuel tank, (probably full of rust) change all the fluids. you will probably need to get the starter rebuilt since it has been sitting outside. they have a tendency to collect water inside.
as far as value, if this tractor were in good running condition and recently serviced, it is worth less than 3000.00. if it were 4wd, it would be worth about 2x that amount. a loader would add probably 1500.00 to the value.
these are generally really good tractors. they are very simple and easy to work on. MOST parts are still available from the dealer. other than the steering box, used parts are easy to find. you should really look into a used loader for it. if you decide this is something you want to pursue and you need more advice, send me a pm with your phone number.

http://austin.craigslist.org/grd/4128589638.html my l275 is very similiar to this but a little newer and has a better transmission, 3 more hp, better hydraulic system and better factory loader with joystick remote. this one has power steering (as does mine) which is really really nice and equally rare. you don't have to worry about it fucking up because water ran down inside the housing. if i were to sell my tractor, i would assume i could get in the low to mid 8k range for it.

Alright, talked to my Gramps. Tractor is a Kubota 185 cicra 1980-81. He says sitting 2 years but it might be more than that and he thinks it needs some work. Ran when parked.
He is willing to gift me the the tractor (as in free) which is pretty much something he never does, i guess i proved myself by resurrecting his old Scout and keeping it on the road for the last 14 years.
Free sounds great but the tractor is in the Ozark mountains in missouri and i am in atlanta. I would like to see him anyway so the trip would multi purpose and not just to pick up the tractor.
