Anyone here ever mess with 944s?

Looking at adding a 944 to the stable in the future, anyone here ever have one and work on it?

I've spotted a couple cheap turbos in my area as well as some cheap rolling shells. Considering maybe a motor swap or just getting a 944 turbo.

What are your impressions of the car? is it similar to the e30 in terms of power/handling/reliability/ease of maintenance? or is it a completely different beast altogether?

A cheap turbo is never a good idea. Anything but a turbo is a slug, and when you do have a turbo its lag city.

Take out terrible I4 and swap in anything else. Trans is in the back, so it's easy peasy.

I like the looks, but the engines......ugggh.....fuck that.

I don't mind the lag so much. Is the handling as good as it's cracked up to be? or is it overhyped?

Are ls swaps common? Can the trans handle it? or will I have to somehow put a t56 back there?

What are guys swapping into them? I assume ford/chevy v8 is on the short list?

With all due respect, the non-aspirated 3-liter S2 model was damn quick and could run circles around a 325i/is (but pare is spot-on about there being no cheap turbos). Buddy of mine had an S2 and it was a brilliant car -- easy to drive fast and wonderfully balanced and responsive.

That said, there is no such thing as a cheap Porsche (turbo or otherwise), including "affordable" 944s. Porsche parts tend to be VERY pricey and any 944 that can be bought cheaply is almost certainly going to need a lot of them. Just know what you're getting into and good luck. These are great driver's cars that generally don't get the respect they deserve.

P.S. Do a little research if you're serious. As I recall, you wanted to stay away from the early ones, which had kind of cheesey-looking interior that got a much-needed upgrade ... I think in the mid- to late-80s.

Are the parts comparatively more expensive than e30 parts?

                  Yes.

                  Quick image search:

                  ...is better than:

I'd like to so a Wankle swap. 944s look like a widebody FC, IMO.

Just get an FC RX-7. Seriously consider it. I regret letting my '88 TII go.

Hear those are REALLY a nightmare.

Cool looking car, love the headlights, but I only hear terrible things.

Headlights are the only thing I care about on the 928, but there really is no porsche that you can get into without deep pockets. Unless you want a Boxter.. Which isnt a bad car if you have a vagina, but still expensive to own.

If I was going to get into a Porsche. Would have to be a 914. Seems they're starting to come up in value and should be as cheap to own as a 924.

                            I wouldn't own a single Porsche.

Get a 951, (944 Turbo), get one with maintenance history and have a through PPI, you will be rewarded with awesome handling, and a very quick car.
