I'm guessing I've DONE more circs than most people, if any in this thread or forum.
The pediatricians have gone back and forth on this issue over the years, and the general consensus is the following.
Given that its not hard to teach boys and young men to peel it back, keep things clean, there is minimal risk to leaving nature as it is. Certainly if you don't "maintain" cleanliness, there are increased risks, but its not tough to teach cleanliness.
In terms of cancer risks, that has not held up over time, there was a study out of Egypt many years ago showing a linkage, but that has not been duplicated since, and is generally thought to not be sound data.
No, sorry, its not at all like an eyelid, and although people are accused of thinking with the wrong head, I am pretty sure no one has said that they can see through their dicks....
Generally... (and I speak of generally) female genital mutilation as a term should be restricted to removing the clitoris which is NOTHING like taking off the foreskin on a male. Removing the labia may be done, but is not really analogous to a circ. The fact of the matter is many adult women PAY to have their labia modified and shortend or changed for cosmetic reasons, and has no effect on functionality or sensation.
At the end of the day, there is no compelling reason medically to remove the foreskin, it is a matter of tradition at this point, and a purely cosmetic thing. It is not too different than ear or nose piercing for babies or children, teaching our children to be one religion or another or any other of many, many choices parents foist on kids without their consent.
One can argue pro/con in terms of sexuality for men. Absolutely the skin of the penis will be more sensitive with the foreskin preserved. Is this better or worse for the male? Hard to say. If its so sensitive that you can only have intercourse for a few seconds, vs minutes, it can be tantamount to premature ejaculation, and not too satisifying for a man. If the tip is less sensitive due to circumcision and the man can last longer before orgasim? Who's to say that is better or worse? Does any circumcised man NOT enjoy sex because they are circ'd?
Contrary to what is stated, in fact, many adults DO get circ'd later in life for a variety of reasons, not all religious. Recurring infections, bacterial, candidiasis etc..... I have many women patients get recurring yeast infectinions from what is effectively a male reservoir, and we have to treat both partners.
The idea that we do circs for profit is laughable. For the measly pay we are exposed to huge risk, and I could care less if I never do another circ from a profit standpoint.
Its like abortion and religion. Why the hell not keep your opinion to yourself. At most you have control over your own offspring, why do you care what other people do? You think you're going to change the world?
Move on... if you don't like circs, don't circ your sons.
Personally, we have a family tradition, and I would want my kids to look like the majority of their friends and the males in my family. Its that simple for me, but I tell my patients its completely up to them and whatever they choose. There is no medical justification, but like breast augmentation, ear piercing, labial reduction, nose jobs, braces, and any number of cosmetic items we inflict on ourselves or our kids... its personal choice.
