Are Explorers really as bad as consumer reports says?

My friend has a 2002 which I really like, but thwe older ones are pieces. I had a 1991 and it was the worst vehicle I have ever owned. I would go for a newer one no problme, but nothing older than the 2002 body style

I have a 98 explorer sport, it hasnt really caused me much trouble just a few things that i would expect from a car with 125,000 miles on it. It gets the job done and i am happy with it for the price i paid. Its no toyota though...

My wife had a '92 that my mom gave me, and that thing was a pile of dogshit, but it also had like 180k miles on it. On the other hand, my grandmother has a '94 that is fucking awesome. It's only got 61k on it, and it still looks brand new. She said that once she stops driving, she's going to give it to me. Will make an awesome DD.
