Back when I was about 9-12 years old, I raced BMX bikes all across FL. I've always been a fan of riding all kinds of bikes but haven't done anything closely related to BMX stuff since I stopped at age 12...until 2 weekends ago when I went to visit a friend up in Brooklyn. He took us over to a community "pump track." A pump track is similar to a normal bmx racing track, but it generally has smaller hills and is designed to be ridden witout the need to pedal by generating forward momentum as you "pump" over small hills.
We had such a blast at the Brooklyn track that I decided to build one in my back yard. I've been googling and researching for the last two weeks and am taking delivery of 25 cy of dirt tomorrow morninig! The secret (according to the guru Lee McCormack) is that no part of the track is flat. It needs to be constantly changing elevation either via berms or roller hills "like a sine wave."
I have a decent sized backyard that I use for almost nothing other than getting me sweaty when I mow it. One half of the yard will be getting a nice car workshop someday but that leaves another half for building my own pump track. I will try to take some pictures along the way to post here.
