Schumacher is in critical condition after a skiing accident

LYON, France - Retired seven-times Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher is in "critical" condition following a fall while skiing off-piste in the French Alps resort of Meribel.
The 44-year-old German was taken to hospital in Grenoble in a coma following the accident, and placed under the care of Professor Gerard Saillant, a brain and spine injury expert.
Schumacher was wearing a helmet a helmet at the time of the accident, the resort director, Christophe Gernigon-Lecomte, told Reuters.
The hospital in Grenoble released a statement later Sunday saying he had "suffered a serious head trauma and arrived in a coma, making it necessary for him to undergo a neurosurgical procedure."

Schumacher's spokeswoman Sabine Kehm was unable to give any further information about his condition but confirmed he was on a private ski trip and had not been alone.
Gernigon-Lecomte said Schumacher, who has a vacation home in Meribel, had been skiing in backcountry, which usually means along unmarked trails.
"He fell around 11:00 am and hit a rock with his head," he added.
Schumacher, whose birthday is on Jan. 3, is the most successful Formula One driver of all time with a record 91 victories among his achievements. He won his titles with Benetton and Ferrari.
He left the sport last year after a three-year comeback with Mercedes following an earlier retirement from Ferrari at the end of 2006. The German lives in Switzerland with his wife and two children.

        Or Colin Mcrae.
Its ironic how they make a living risking their lives in stupid fast cars and then something like this happens.

Reminds me of Alan Kulwicki and Davey Allison too. Racers that go in some other way is really sad to see them leave in a way you'd never expect. And my red neck is likely showing.

So sad, hopefully he's able to recover. As some one that works in the ski industry I'm curious if he was wearing a helmet.

Doctors have grim outlook on Michael Schumacher's condition

GRENOBLE, France (AP) -- Doctors offered a grim assessment of Michael Schumacher's head injuries Monday, providing no prognosis for the Formula One driving great after his skiing accident in the French Alps.

Schumacher has been placed in a medically induced coma to relieve pressure on his brain, which suffered bruising and bleeding when the retired seven-time world champion fell and struck a rock Sunday while skiing during a family vacation.

"We cannot predict the future for Michael Schumacher," Dr. Jean-Francois Payen, the doctor in charge of Grenoble University Hospital's intensive care unit, said at a news conference.

"He is in a critical state in terms of cerebral resuscitation," said Payen, the chief anesthesiologist treating the 44-year-old German driver. "We are working hour by hour."

                  ...

Still, the hospital's neurology team, which is recognized as among the best in France, was cautious about Schumacher's prospects.

Doctors lowered his body temperature to between 34 and 35 degrees Celsius (93.2 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit) as part of the coma, which essentially rests the brain, slowing its metabolism to help reduce inflammation after an injury.

                  ...

Meribel resort officials said Schumacher was conscious when first responders arrived, although agitated and in shock.

After the fall, Payen said Monday, Schumacher was not in a "normal state of consciousness." He did not respond to questions, and his limbs appeared to move involuntarily, the doctor said.

Seven times Formula One champion Michael Schumacher has been reportedly operated for the second time after suffering brain haemorrhage in a ski accident in the French Alps.
I'm guessing they have removed a large part of his skull to deal with the hematoma.

The former f1 doctor that has been tweeting, early on said things don't look good if they have to do a second operation. Bummer.

EDIT: Sounds like they have removed portions of his skull on both sides to relieve ICP. (Not the rappers.)

                              The Stig is down.

Jeremy Clarkson's tweets, "The worrying thing about brain injuries is that you can recover only to find you're a midget with a marked Birmingham accent when drunk."

And then, "In other words, it's possible after even a big brain bang to go back to exactly how you were before"
