    Philosophy

Has anybody here taken any philosophy classes? If anyone could give a summary of Hobbes and Locke's theories (specificly on conquest), that would be great.
I need to write a paper, and am just trying to gather some ideas.

    Thanks.

Or you could do your own work.

Do you have a specific question for the paper? If so, what is it?

Oh wait, that's the philosophy that Hobbes and Calvin were the inspiration for Fight Club.

      nevermind.

Dunno about conquest, but this is what I remember from European history...

Hobbes: Believed in a totalitarian government governed by the leviathan, an all knowning being that isn't human. Hobbes believed that people were not capable of self-government. Believed people were inherently evil and needed to be controlled.

Locke: Believed in the idea of the social contract, in which citizens give up some of their rights for the sake of the whole (basically the fundamentals of a democracy) Believed people were inherently good.

Relax, I am not asking for anyone to give me a completed paper. i am just asking about their general theories to help me get ideas.

I am supposed to compare Hobbes and Locke on the question of whether conquest can be justified. To what extent do they agree in their aspective acounts of war in the state of nature.

I know that Hobbes belives that conquest Can be justified, because of self preservation/right of nature.
I am not exactly sure about Locke though.

            Any thoughts are appreciated.

dude... wikipedia first for the synopsis, then sparknotes for the details on the work. its by no means a substitute for the real thing, but it will help you to understand some of the nuances that most dont pick up on the first time around.
