    Getting water out of carpet. FFS.

    Wife gets up to use the bathroom at about 6:30 this morning and comes running back in because the bathroom floor is flooded.

    Well, the fill tube came off of the overflow tube, and the toilet just kept filling until it flooded out the bathroom, and about a 4x4 section of carpet in the hallway.


    I don't think much leaked through, as our bathroom is laminated and they caulked every corner of every border in the bathroom. I tried to call maintenance and let them know that while I took care of the problem, they may want to check on the guy below us. Unfortunately I can't get through right now, so that will have to wait.

    My question is, any tips for drying this damn carpet? It's like a fucking sponge and all of my towels are currently in the drier. (All 4 of them, I know I have a vast collection.)

              First things first: Is it your house? If not, WGAS! Your landlord will have insurance, and hopefully you do too for contents.

              If it's your house: Everything off the wetted floor. Everything wet into the washer. Doesn't sound like it's a bad "wet" so grab a massive shop heater, and blast the shit out of the area. You want that area below 50% humidity as fast as you can do it (mould).

              If it's possible, pull the wet carpet away so the heat can penetrate the underlay, and grab a dehumidifier while you're at it.

              You should be fine, these things happen.

                  Yea it's not too much water. And we are in a 3rd floor apartment.

                  I'm sure it sounds worse than it is. 3 shower towels dried the bathroom floor, the carpet is the only part that's giving me trouble.

                  At first I thought for sure the guy down stairs would have gotten some, but as I said they did a hell of a job caulking all the seams in the BR so I am not too worried about it.

                  No dehumidifier, so for now I have a fan blowing on that section.

                  Not to mention, I have heard the pipes going a few times this morning and no phone calls or knocks on the door yet. I would prefer to enjoy my Sunday than have people coming in and making a huge fuss about a little spill. Not to mention I'm sure the fact that I went ahead and fixed the toilet myself could cause me more headaches than it would have just letting it run. Never know what people will try to hit you with as far as charges these days.

                      Use a shop vac or carpet shampooed to suck up as much water as you can. You say it's like a sponge, well it is. Carpet padding under the carpet is literally a sheet of foam rubber.

                          Yep. Shop vac minus the filter works like a charm.

                              rice is very absorbent, put a bunch of rice down on the carpet - this will become its own pain in the ass to clean up later, but i'd rather vacuum up a bunch of rice than have a wet carpet

                              one way to avoid this (but it won't absorb as much water as fast) is to leave the rice in the bag, but put a lot of small holes in the bag, and just leave the bag there all perforated

                                  Place a towel over the area and them pounding with your fist will compress the carpet and padding, squeezing the water out, allowing the towel to soak it up. Rubbing a towel across the carpet won't do much as most of the water is under the carpet in the padding.
