    School me on mk3's

Alright r3v. I recently bought a 95 golf variant tdi. I needed a more economical car since a 318is in europe is not the cheapest car to run (city mpg sucks).
So i went out and bought me this pile. It cost 1,5k, it has 200k miles and a 90 hp 1z tdi motor.(no rust)

So far i enjoy the epic mpg and the down low torque. But it's not without it's problems, the handling sucks balls, brakes are meh, the shifter is sloppier than inufaye and the car needs more balls.
For handling i'm thinking a suspension refurbish with a big rear sway and some cheap coils (ta technix or jom, what do you think?), and ofcourse tires and rims.
For the shifter mabye a 02j shifter assembly?
For the balls i think i'm gonna do injectors, remap and eventually clutch and turbo.
For the brakes, is a rear disk conversion worthwile? And some g60 280mm brakes up front.

Here's some pics of the POS

It it's a DD, leave it as such. Leave the motor alone, for the sake of economy. I do however agree with the idea of (a cheap)suspension & shifter. For the brakes, flush them(check the lines too) and get some more aggressive pads.

You guys and your Mk3 wagons. You know we never got them here right?

Good bushings, a bigger aftermarket rear sway, and coils will make a tremendous difference and I definitely recommend it. Do not use poly for the rear control arm bushing though, it will bind. Use the OEM rubber R32 bushing instead. Poly is okay for the front control arm bushing.

Is this an 020 or O2a trans? Cable shift or linkage? Over here, our Mk3 diesel cars were 020 trans with a rod linkage. If that's the case, you can't convert to cable shift (02J) and you'll have to rebuild the linkage and add a short shift lever which will help a ton.

G60 280mm brakes in front are good. Good fluid and good pads will really make the difference though, even with your stock front brakes which are 256mm. It isn't worth it to swap to discs in the rear, especially on a daily. Because of the car's weight balance, the rear brakes don't do a whole bunch and rear discs with grabby pads will just lock the rears up. Plus, the ebrake mechanism on VW/Audi's rear discs is easily frozen, which locks your ebrake on full time. I vote you should retain the drums.

I just put the engine upgrade into question because i need to do the injector nozzles anyways, they are worn/dirty. I was thinking of putting 110 hp afn injectors (.205 nozzles) since they are cheap and help with performance/ fuel economy.

Sabes como é que é! The e30 spoils your automotive standards, you want every car to handle like it ;D

Yes i am aware that you never got them there, but apart from the fat ass it's the same car

This one has a 02a with cable linkage, from what i researched it seems like a straight foward swap.

That's what i tought about rear disks, i read many horror storys about mk2 gti's rear calipers freezing.

My car has 256mm solid brake rotors (non vented) and here 280mm brakes are easy to come by since there were many cars that came with them (seat ibizas gt-tdis)

Yeah same car, but just neat from our perspective. Probably boring to you guys.

Strange that it has an O2a, so different from here. In that case, yes I think the O2j linkage is a good swap.

If the 280mm swap is cheap and easy to find, go for it. Once again you guys are lucky. The only car that setup came on over here was the Corrado G60, so they aren't cheap or common here.

280mm rotors are cheap new and you can bolt on the Audi 80 turbo Quattro front calipers (2 piston) right to your spindles. Combine that with some R4-s pads and ss brake lines and you will have awesome brakes for pretty cheap.

Check out tectonics tuning for shifter parts. Great people and products. They also have awesome cat backs which will make the car sound a lot better. They make a difference on the gas powered cars, not sure on the diesels though.

Nobody has mentioned a front strut tie bar yet. Biggest improvement you can make for these cars as far as handling and steering responce. Urethane front suspension bushings will helpa lot along with urethane strut bushings.
