I worked the mazda out pretty hard today, and it loved it. We got about 6 inches of snow, which wasnt really a problem. But tonight, the water underneath it froze into ice.
So, I was on this road, kinda out in the boonies a bit, not a lot of traffic on it. And The road was bone dry, Im still going pretty slow because it is bad out. I start turning down the on ramp, I look over and I can see where atleast 4 cars had not been able to take the turn and hit this median. But there was no ice I could see.
I go pretty slow, but not granny style. Right when the curve hits the apex I see a sheet of black ice, I didnt have time to slow down before it I was going maybe 10-15mph. So I hit it and im like oooh shit, thats why so many cars went off the road damnit! Knowing FWD is just going to understeer my ass into the curb I try to line the wheels up for a straight impact and not hit the sign.
Well, I successfully did do that, but it left my car teetering on the frame somewhat in the middle of this median thing. It was like two parallel curbs with about 5-6 feet inbetween them and about 2 feet deep. At this time I am checking to see if any warning lights are on, good they are not I see. I get out and check the tires, none look to be popped, awesome!
Luckly a guy in a truck sees me and offers to pull me out, we hook a chain up and start pulling, it sounded like my car was getting beatin to shit from the frame grinding on the curbs. But we get it out. For some reason a lady stopped and watched us the whole time, just to come up to me and say she already towed one person out of that exact same spot, I said I figured a few people did the same thing, I had seen the multiple tracks in the snow.
Some how the car didnt have any damage, alignment was still good, rims not bent, no popped tires, I was pretty stoked.
I go pickup my buddy and tell him what happened, and I drove out again to show him where I went off. Probably about 20 min has elapsed. Right when we get out, another car was stuck in the exact same spot! But he was even closer to the sign.
Anyways, I am still getting used to FWD, it defiantly will plow through snow better, but this whole understeer thing is hard for me to get used to. I keep thinking the back end is gonna break out on me. I drove my 325i in two winters and never ever went in a ditch or hit anything, I would just get stuck occasionally.
However, I did fuck my alignment up a bit, I went to a parking lot and made a snow track to rally through. Around one of my awesome hairpins I dug down to the asphalt, and when I came though it I didnt slide as much as I had anticipated and clipped one of those cement parking log thingys. Now my car pulls a tad to the left.
In all I am surprised at to what a beating this car can take and still run!
