I dont hate on him more than anyone else, I think most if not all mainstream rap/popular music is absolutely mediocre, but what do I know? Not like I studied music theory, taught myself instruments, went to recording school, worked in studios (on his 808's and heartbreak album funnily enough). None of that matters if all people want is some random asshole who spouts at the mouth, makes way more money than any non-public-service occupation should make, has the ability to loop beats on a synth, can work an 808 drum machine, and lives the life they all wish they could live. Actual musicality and talent be damned. He can rap, and he's got catchy beats. I dont hate the guy, which is more than I can say for most music nowadays, but your post worries me. No wonder anyone who can actually can align tape, record analogously, is well-versed in the acoustic merits and nuances of a recording space, can tell you what mics are better for what frequencies, can use a room as an instrument, knows how to work a mixing board cant get a job. Its all beat-making components, copy and pasting, and sampled music.....

Which, to an extent, has permeated and been the cause of death of most of my most loved genres. It gets so watered down and bloated. Then the industry HAS to make a buck and starts churning our carbon copies of what they believe to be the reigning "formula" that it becomes a shadow of its former self, thereby collapsing on its own weight and ending in tears until the next socially-relevant underground music that actually touched people deep in their soul comes around.

I am, but kanye isn't hip hop. Hip hop is rap, but not all rappers can do hip hop. I hate labelling genre's, especially with rock/alternative which has branched into what seems nothing short of about a hundred different genre's...but for hip hop it's necessary. One is a lifestyle, one is a method of using rhyme to make money and flaunt that money.

With that said, I'm tired of everyone going around whining that hiphop is dead. Ye makes good music, simple as that. Both as a lyricist and a producer. In regards to mainstream rap(not calling it hip hop, as commercial garbage doesn't represent the hip hop culture); yes, it is garbage for the most part. Kanye West is an amazing producer though, his lyrics just happen to be generic as shit and the sounds he chose to produce(808's and Heartbreaks, mainly) sounded like shit, even though well produced.

Rhymesayers, Naturesounds, Stones Throw, Rawkus(in their hey day), etc is where it's at.

The only people with this viewpoint were never involved/knew about the real hip hop culture in the first place.
