Worked in an union automotive service shop?

Tell me your input. In nj, there aren't any union technician jobs that I know of. I heard Cali has them.

I am considering leaving the state this upcoming year and this is all new to me, so any input on union shops or fleet work is more then welcome.

in my experience your going to find union shops for automotive work is slim to none, no heavy construction shops, mines and the Rail Roads are where you going to find the Union mechanics jobs

if you're lucky you might find a shop that still pays flat rate. doubt it, though.

I never heard of them in California in my past life there, but being California, I wouldn't be surprised.

Nope. I have never heard of a union for auto mechanics, although, I'm sure you can find some Union willing to take you under their wing. Maybe it won't be strictly automotive but it will be a mechanics Union of some sort.

When I was a low voltage installer, our company was part of the IBEW Union which is mainly for electrical workers and the DWP (department of water and power).

On another note. The medical marijuana industry here is California has a union they belong to. If they have a union, maybe the automotive trade has something. I mean it's all about dues. As long as you pay your Union dues, your golden.

I don't know why you would want to belong to a union shop, but the UAW network looks pretty vast. I know they're always desperate for members to pay for their retirees benefit packages.

Well I wa interested as a second resort to flat rate. Having a designated pay and benefits would be a no brainer.

I am assuming fleet work would just be hourly not salary correct? Any input on working on fleet vehicles?

I just went from working flat-rate with no guarantee at a BMW dealer, to working in union fleet maintenance for a large utility company. The dealership was a lot cleaner, but we were having trouble keeping the work amount up and the amount of shit I put up with had me looking for any other job that paid the same. I got lucky and landed here. I am kind of getting sick of turning wrenches, and this place isn't "perfect" by anymeans, but the pay is %100 better than the flat rate experience I had.
