Am I paying too much for insurance?

I'm 17 years old (most likely the issue) turning 18 in may, I have two tickets on my record, one a speeding ticket going 16 over I believe, another that turned into defective head lamp. The defective head lamp was the most recent ticket and that was over a year and a half ago. I got into a fender bender and went through insurance and they deemed it %100 the other persons fault. I have american family and I'm paying $182.20 a month for liability and maybe towing. As a 17 year old kid and trying to save up for parts for the E30 and this is breaking my bank every month. Am I paying too much or am I just going to have to suck it up?

I don't know for sure about CO, but that seems about average considering you record. To lower your rate you could own a home, get married, suddenly become 25, or switch companies.

Do you have anyone in the family that would qualify you for a USAA policy?

In general insurance when sub 22 is terrible. I would wager that many of us have had others insure our primary car, but I am not saying you should do that because it would be illegal.

Go to a broker and get quotes, it's free. People seem to think the only insurance companies out there are the ones they see on commercials when they are typically the most expensive.

Different insurance companies specialize in certain markets. There are insurance companies that will cheaper if you have a dui and some that are cheaper for seniors or younger people like yourself. Get quotes from a broker, there is a guy in the cali section that does insurance if you can find him.

Also look into group discounts. Like if you are part of a professional association or some sort of members club. Many are free/cheap to join and can reduce your rate significantly. I went from $160/month to $72/month when I joined APEGA (Association for professional engineers in Alberta).

You can start by not getting more tickets

I'm only 20 and have a clean record. It's $140 a month for both my cars ($70 each)

I tell everyone, AAA is the best insurance ever. I've had geico and a few others, none compare to AAA.

                        Well.
First, I am Canadian, wich makes it look worse. Here are the Numbers.

                        Late 80's- Clean record.
                        - 4 Cyl. two door car (the deemed it a sports car class cause it had two doors. kinda a kick in the nuts cause it was an AMC Spirit)
                        -Policy under my own name

$400 and change a month. Just over 5000 a year

My step-son with a clean record and a ford explorer was quoted $7,000 a year.

                        REASON.
Insurance company is the only company allowed to discriminate. YOUNG/MALE You will be screwed for insurance.

My rate in my 30's on a couple cars, nothing too fancy or exotic, clean record is around $2000 a year.

When I first started driving at 16, I was quoted $213 a month for liability on my e30. It's complete bullshit and a total rip off but that is just how insurance works. Since you are young, they are going to charge a shit ton for your premiums even on liability because they could care less about your car, but more so about the people around you who you may hit due to being high risk. I payed that premium for almost 3 years until I threatened Geico I was leaving and then all of a sudden they offer to chop my premiums by 65%. Total bullshit.

So anyways, shop around and see what other companies offer. You may or may not find a cheaper quote than what you have right now. If a company does offer less, call you current insurance and let them know these guys are offering a cheaper rate. If they cannot do better, leave.
