Does anyone know anything about PIC programming?

I would like to learn how to make little ICs to perform stupid tasks. However, there is so much inofrmation out there that I dont even know where to begin. I would like just something simplistic, like a book and a "start kit" of sorts that would just show me step by step how to do little things, I could then kinda branch off from that.

Anyone know?
