"random testing" is typically not random. It's usually aimed at employees suspected of being high at work, so a bunch of other people get pulled in at the same time so it doesn't look like discrimination.

I've worked for Insurance and Defense companies............no random testing ever. But where I work now with a large % of workers being production/shop guys, it happens every 4-6 months.

my freshman year of college I smoked at least 3 times a day. and didn't work out, stopped for 2 weeks while I was in Europe visiting family, came back and took a drug test, and passed. All I did was drink water like a motherfucker. I actually had to take the test twice because I drank so much water the first time that my sample came out too diluted. All the people in HR knew but had no proof that I smoked weed. I ended up partaking with 2 other coworkers frequently and once with my boss in his brand new A6. All in all good times.

Seriously, I don't know why so many companies bother testing other than to maybe cover their asses somehow. I could understand they don't want to hire someone with substance abuse issues, but piss testing only is really effective in detecting weed which is generally one of the more mild substances out there (i.e. many people use it recreationally without huge consequence). I figure if someone has an addiction that really affects their productivity, it would be more likely another substance like alcohol or coke or something stronger.

We're currently in a weird time when the stigma around weed is shrinking (along with regulation in certain areas) but there's still a strong framework to try and prevent/punish its use.
