    E53 X5 4.4l: M62 or N62?

I need a tow vehicle for ~4,000lb boat/trailer and am trying to decide between the M62 or N62 E53. I am open to a newer X5 but prefer the look of E53 as well as less electronics and crap to go wrong. Researching the pros and cons this is what I believe is generally agreed:
M62: more reliable but less power and obviously stuck with 00-03 models. Get the 2003 if going M62
N62: more power but less reliable mainly due to more complex management and worse coolant system design. Tranny is worse than M62's. Main expenses (if lucky) are intermediate levels and Get the 2006 if going N62

Is this accurate? I would rather sacrifice power and MPG for reliability but I'm sure there is more to it. What preventative maintenance should I make sure has been recently done or need to do myself if buying either one?

Which ever one you want that'll fit in an e30 after you wreck the e53... on purpose.

M62 you'll eventually do a timing chain on. N62 you'll do a coolant pipe and valve stem seals on.

I would go with an M62.

4th Gen 4Runner with the 4.7. 7000lb towing capacity, 18mpg, Toyota reliability (aka, don't have be nervous about all the little crap you would be with the X5).

            Keep it slideways!!

'08-'09. Limited, if you can swing it. It'll be my next truck unless I go with a Tacoma.

Thank you, it looks like fourth gen is the only one to offer v8! Seems lame that the v8 only has ~10% more power and torque than the v6 though. I suppose that is just enough to make towing a 4,000 load up windy mountains a lot better than the V6. I wonder if it's worth the worse fuel economy for 99% of the driving though.
