I'm about to do the same thing. I'm 28, moving across the country. My family is really supportive of this actually. Trying to get everything in order is a challenge but it doesn't seem that hard. I've been going through my stuff and getting rid of anything I don't need. It's quite refreshing to feel like you're starting with a clean slate. Good luck!

Kind of just did this. Lived in Bend, OR my whole life (I'm 26) and lost my job in August. Couldn't find anything in my field (Manufacturing), so ended up moving to Portland. First time away from family and first time I've ever lived in a different city. So far it has worked out great. I got an awesome job, I'm enjoying the city and am thinking about buying a house soon.

          Appreciate the input guys.
          EDIT
I havent really thought about the military. While it would be perfect for someone in my situation, I kinda know what I would want to fix things around here. I live in one of the wealthiest counties in USA, yet my mother is a struggling supporting mom of 3 with a dad whos pretty much bed ridden for life. To see what I see around here, the money and the overinflated egos and lack of social norms just really can ruin who I can get along with or basically any interations in my area (whethor it be shopping, social, recreational, etc) makes me not miss the fact of leaving this area.

As of now, I have a nice little chunk of change saved for the move. The issues I have holding me back are:

I am pretty sure that I do not want to wrench for the rest of my life. I want to go back to school to pursue something else, so it might be a bit difficult to find a school to accept me/job/overhead all in one.

And I havent really been anywhere besides NJ. I just went down to Georgia two weeks ago. I loved Savannah and Augusta seemed OK (just seemed like a typical exit off the main highway kinda city). For some reason I have a huge vibe to go to the pnw or west coast in general.

I really hope I can go through with this because like I said, Its something Ive thought of for the past few years and this fall is the best opportunity for me to go through with it. I know if I stick around I will most likely regret it.

I moved to Portland from Texas 2 years ago. Had no family or friends here. It took a while to get the job I wanted but has been awesome all the way.

I did it when I was 18, and it led me to a great career with BMW which landed me where I am today... I went from a $10/hr job to a 6 figure income in 4 years. Now 31, I don't regret anything I did along the way. A move will help clarify your head and help you find your path. Shake it up and enjoy!

We're doing it at the end of the summer, the whole family. We're pulling up our roots from here in Bend, Oregon where we've lived almost our whole lives, and moving to Portland. We lost our rental home a few months ago, and with such a choked market here, it's impossible to get a footing to start over. So we're doing a complete reboot and going for broke, new jobs, new place, new everything. It's scary as hell, and incredibly exciting all at the same time.

ha well living there for 22 years and dealing with the shit winters and unpredictable-ness of the weather is what drove me nuts, one day it would be 60 and sunny, the next day it would be 20 with half a foot of snow.

I grew up in Rochester, moved to the finger lakes area (Honeoye), then went to college in Buffalo, Rochester wasn't as terrible as living in Buffalo, but it all equally sucked

                  don't have to shovel sunshine

LOL yeah Bufflo and the lake effect can whip your ass in terms of shoveling. Every time I get around the finger lakes or the Northern Catskills or Adirondacks I always think for a sec "hey I could live her....................." "wait a fucking Min this is NY no god dammed way" Might be up around Burlington VT most of this year, if we got the job, at least till the snow flies enough to shut us down for the year.

Are you not happy with your life BECAUSE of family changes and friends moving, personal interest, ect...?? Or are you not happy with yourself? I only ask because if your not happy with yourself then no matter where you go you will not be happy until you deal with you and your happiness. If it's because of your sorroundings and need a fresh start i say move somewhere that offers you job opportunities like near a big city. The last thing you want to do is move to some rural-as-fuck place, have no friends, and can't find a job! My advice, try Texas...i hear is great there. Good luck

I third this. I moved to Denver from a little town outside Philly in 2000 at the age of 20. A year and a half ago moved the family again to Portland, OR. I don't know what I'd be doing right now had I stayed in PA, but besides realizing the woman who's now my wife was the one, moving away was the best decision I ever made.

I skipped out of SoCal and went to Phoenix. Haven't looked back. I was about your age, too. I also happen to have a spare bedroom if you need a place to stay while you get on your feet. ;)

In Buffalo, we had snow from November to April this past winter. Not quite 3/4ths of the year, but 1/2 the year is still pretty miserable.

We had that in Ohio this year too. The winter was one of the big pushes for me to move. I'm tired of being couped up in my house half of the year.

I'm doing it next month, I'm off to GA, I have only ever visited a few times. I am tired of NJ, and am going to take a chance in GA.
