Has anyone registered/trademarked their own company?

Has anyone gone through setting their own business up legally? My leather company is really going strong and I feel it is the next step past a 'profitable hobby'. I did a bit of research, but found only a bunch of sites that require a payment(not upset over that), I want to make sure I am doing it right and not wasting my money. I already did a search in the trademark database for anyone with 'BWeiss Leather', nothing in the USA, but it only matters if it is the the same state as you. Both are a negative, I am just looking for some advice from someone that has gone through it before. I am meeting up with my tax lady to setup a portion of legal things for my new company in the coming month. Right now with only word of mouth, I am doing considerably well. Hoping with my new website and attending local and other NY craft markets I will someday be able to go to work daily doing what I love.

If anyone has missed out on what I do, take a look! any word of mouth spreading is greatly appreciated! I also have business cards for anyone or business that wants to place some out for me.

Shop items by BWeissLeather located in Denver, Colorado.

Go through New York State website. They will have a section there for businesses. You just need to file with the state for the name and business entity (assuming LLC or something similar). I formed a contracting business 8 years ago.

I did this in NJ, cost me something like $90 to register with the state. You'll get a tax ID number so you can pay quarterly sales taxes to the state. Beyond that everything is on your end for insurance/federal taxes etc.

Registering your business and trademarking the name are two different things.

I registered my company in BC and Podi is a dba, pretty simple to do and this is more for tax reporting requirements than anything else. This would be a Provincial/State registration so someone else in another province/state could use the same name.

I trademarked "Podi" in Canada and the USA and this is a country wide registration of use. I used a law firm that specializes on IP to help me file the paperwork as I had some extra funds but no time.

It did not cost a lot to do the trademark and if you wanted to speak to the firm I used just PM me.
