Yea, Dozy has an interesting theory. But it totally neglects that Donnie's therapist seems tobe creating his memories in therapy, sort of like a lot of those alien abduction victims.

So I watched Donnie Darko for the first time today after seeing this thread and I really liked this movie, I wish I would have gotten around to watching it sooner.
