Usually you rent them along with the service. I know it is cheaper if you have your own.

I have the same modem. Funny thing is though, nearly every store had them for free after rebate.

Turns out the one I bought at the garage sale won't work with my service, so the guy refunded me. But I went down to my service provider today, and I was able to swap out to a new SB5101 modem.

Hmmm I have a couple modems sitting in my closet. Damn cable company shut my fun down after running a ton of unregistered ones lol, they didnt like that too much.
