aaaaaaaand a soldier was just shot about 10 minutes ago about fucking 500 meters from my office in downtown Ottawa...

heard a bunch of sirens and didn't think much of it until a coworker just came in and said they say a soldier get gunned down...at our very own War Memorial of all places.

    WTF!!!!

Prime Minister Stephen Harper gave an evening address to say Canada would not be intimidated by Wednesday's "brutal and violent attack" in Ottawa, in which an armed attacker fatally wounded a Canadian Forces member at the National War Memorial before being shot dead in Parliament's Centre Block.

I wouldn't consider this to be an act of terrorisim. It appears that the perpetrator was not acting with a larger goal in mind and was simply driven to commit murder, albeit a targeted one. Quite probably due to mentioned "radicalization," which generally means a good ol' self inflicted mind fuck, although certain people are more able convince themselves or be led to those wrong minded conclusions.

We (including CAN, GBR, etc) use a too broad spectrum definition of terrorism. There should be more of an effort to avoid this as it inures the public to said acts when they do happen. However it does facilitate certain actions on the gov'ts part that would otherwise be considered infringements on personal/public freedoms.

Act of terrorism or one nutjob?

*if mods feel the need to move this to P&R go ahead*

with all the sensationalism over Isis and the threat of global terror, this story hit VERY close to home for me and my family.

St-Jean sur Richelieu is a very small French town about 50km out of Montreal.

It's unclear whether this is an act of terrorism, or just one guy (which infact was known to the Feds) who fell off his rocker.

IMO, in order to constitute an act of terror it would have to be something more than running down a couple of soldiers in a shopping mall parking lot.

not to dismiss the fallen soldier, or undermine the seriousness of the murder but this seems to be a little on the light side if it's to be classified as terrorism.
