Just saw these on the apple website. They look pretty nice, but I can't figure out why the price difference is so large between the midrange and upper model. The only differences seem to be hard drive size and color. But you can upgrade the hard drive on the midrange for $50, and the price difference between the two models is $200, which means you're paying $150 for the black case? Maybe I am missing another difference.

MacBooks are made of plastic (essentially), and MacBook Pros are made from aluminium. Non-Pros will be a bit more durable in everyday use. MacBooks are only 13", Pros are 15" and 17". MacBooks also come standard with smaller hard drives.
I just ordered a dual 2.0ghz (which just got upgraded for free to 2.16ghz)...can't wait to get it. -
I was asking about the differnces in the MacBook lineup, not the MacBook Pros...sorry if the first post was confusing. There are 3 setups, $1099, $1299, and $1499, the last one being black. The only differences I can find between the $1299 setup and $1499 setup is a 20gb hard drive difference, and the color. The hard drive only accounts for a small part of that difference, and I don't see how they can get away with charging extra for a different color casing.Originally posted by permitMacBooks are made of plastic (essentially), and MacBook Pros are made from aluminium. Oh, woops. The first and second are a $200 difference due to processor speeds. Second and third are a $200 difference because they have to make the black version more of a "special" item. If it were only a $20 difference, a lot more people would be buying the black one, and the color would lose it's novelty.Comment

Likewise. I can go back with "windows" to about 1991 - never had a virus. My current 2k box in my garage is 7 years old on that install, never had to redo anything. The PC itself is 10 years old, with a dual boot 95 install that I've never redone. Likewise I've got a 5 year old XP install in my apartment, no problems. 4 years on my current laptop without a hiccup.Originally posted by DaveCNI have had about a dozen Windows machines since Windows 98 came out and never had any problems. none have been "killed" yet.
