    ASVAB Score: 92

I scored a 92 on the ASVAB recently, the highest score in Georgia in the last five years was 97 and 99 is the highest possible.

I think I am going for NAVY Nuc Program. Usually you have to take another test to qualify for that program; well I got in with my ASVAB line scores alone.

This is not a "pat me on the back" thread; though feel free. I need advice from anyone that has military experience on how to negotiate a signing bonus. Usually they give you a 10K bonus after you finish the third school, which can be up to two years into the 6 year enlistment! That is not cool.

Any help is appreciated. This is a big decision for anyone; I would rather continue the lack-luster, free spirited existance that I have now instead of sign my life over for no dough!!!

Congratulations on your score! Although I don't have any answers to your question, you bringing up the ASVAB test scores brought back memories. From the best of my recollection, I scored a 96-97 on mine and for YEARS the military would not leave me alone! I had no interest at the time in joining, but that did not stop them from calling and coming by my school every couple of weeks to try to talk me into it.

Good luck to you in the military-just don't believe everything they tell you in regards to what they will do for you!

I've had a great time in the military. Yeah I scored a 92 and was offered the Nuc program. Think now the signing bonus is $15k and you get it after you finish the first school. I can check tomorrow to make sure. Reenlistmens are where you make the most money, up to $65k for 5-6 years!!

I want some money up front is the thing... I planned to start the NUC school (1 of 3), but apply for the Academy the first part of next year. I guess I will wait untill I complete Nuc school instead.

            Academy?

When I was in (87-91) there were two slots, IIRC, that went from fleet to Academy. Good luck with that.

I did 4 year active Navy, and then, so far, 10 years on and of in the National Guard.

I loved my time in the Navy. With what they offer today, and GI bill, you will be set to pay for school, and can take free classes while in. Your school will be very hard. But, when you get out, you will have quite a few things going for you:

            Nuclear training
            Security Clearance
Proven track record (if you keep your nose clean)

What type of job are they offering you? There are the nuke jobs, and then there are jobs that are also nuke related.

And as for money? If you are joining, and do well, when you get out or re-enlist, thats where the real money is.

I am going for Nuc Eletronics Tech... the reinlistment, now, is $75k... I am not sure that I will do that, however. I think I am going to start Nuc school, apply/ get into the Academy, then go back to nuc school as an officer... at least that is what I am told you can do.

I think the first bonus I get for nuc is after the third nuc school

I hate this part of the enlistment... don't really know what exactly to expect!

Nice job! I managed to score a 99 and I think my recruiter was about ready to offer herself to me to get me to go full-time into the nuke program instead of the reserves. What amazed me was the guys at MEPS bragging about their scores in the low 70s and lower...

I hear that. I took it when I was thinking about OCS post college and I got a 97 and they turned into stalkers.

I would consider it if you arent doing post-secondary education or cant afford it. My ex used the military to pay for her school and it turned out decent. Its a way to force you to save, you come out with a lot, and there are a list of benefits that come with being military/ex-military.

Kyle, the military has a special branch of people they train to lie whenever possible: the recruiters.

Get ANYTHING they promise ON PAPER, and NOT signed by some fucking E3.

D'ya hear me here, bucko? Do NOT accept any "promises", that is all bullshit.

All of you guys who think "I am gonna start off in Nuke and switch to Officer" are blatantly full of shit. If you don't already have a degree, good fucking luck. Something like .01% of enlisted men get to swap over to the Officer side, no matter what.

And Kyle, over 80% of the guys headed off to nuke school wash out in the first 6 weeks. IF you get a bonus up front (you won't, I promise) they will make you sign a paper to pay it back if you fail for any reason.

Do you really want the US Navy chasing your ass around?

In Nuke school, they write shit on a chalkboard with the right hand, then erase it with the left. Can you keep that pace for 24 weeks? Very few can.

Whatever you sign up for, make damn sure you leave yourself an escape route. You will want to get them to give you a contract that says if you don't make it through Nuke school, you get to get out of the Military.

They will fuck you over endlessly, but make sure you win. Keep your eyes open here, you aren't fucking around with amatuers: these guys mean business.

Remember, you are signing up to be a member of the dirtiest, shittiest part of the largest terrorist organisation on earth: the US Government.

Do NOT take that for granted: they OWN you ass, literally.

They CAN transfer you to another branch of the military, they CAN send you to live on a rock in the southern hemisphere where you never see any other humans except more military.

Find the bunch of lawyers who wrote the UCMJ, they are in Conneticut.

Keep in mind a Nuke isn't necessarily an easy thing to replace: they are gonna keep your ass at sea for-fucking-ever. If you are on an Aircraft Carrier, you won't see the sky for a year or more at a time, will barely have any communication with the outside world, nothing.

Not much different on a Sub, except you get better food. In the "Boomers", you will be at sea for 3 months, then on shore for 3 months. IMO, that is the best life for a Nuke.

Either way, expect to glow in the dark.

Oh yeah, if the message was missed: go get your own fucking degree, get a GPA no less than 3.8, then apply to West Point or some shit.

There are only so many officers: those slots are reserved for Congressmens' sons and daughters, not us mortals.

uhh.. this thread is nearly 4 years old. I'm kinda curious how it works out, though.

(And for the record, I knew/know numerous people who were prior enlisted that went to the Academy/NROTC and are now doing something not related to what they did when they were enlisted.)
