    Cool Cop Thread

So I was aiming my headlights up against this fence in my neighborhood, and occasionally a car would pass. I guess this is kinda weird because it's at night and some "sketchy" car is sitting against this fence, so someone calls the cops. I see the cop car and am like "do I really have to deal with the popo right now?" So the cop pulls up behind my car, takes a few seconds to get out.

Then I explain what I'm doing, and he realizes it's an e30. His face lights up and he goes "I used to be a bmw mechanic for 15 years before I became a cop... I remember these things! They are so fun to drive.. I had 3 in my driveway! especially the all wheel drive ix... I used to get sideways going up on ramps with all four wheels burning...

So I'm standing there like :ST1G::ST1G::ST1G: This guy is the man! Then we talked about e30's for a while and he was looking at the engine bay reliving his time with his e30's and it was really cool. I asked him if he has any ideas as to why my car is overheating and he was like "uh yea you don't have a fan in front of your radiator" Then he explained all about how I need a fan clutch and he explained exactly what I needed to do to install it. It was really really interesting to see this guy in badge and uniform with his flash light completely sucked into my car, and he basically turned into mechanic man for probably 12 minutes. Then he was like aite peace, and drove away.

It was quite refreshing to not have a cop breathing down my neck, then to have the cop know all about my car was just awesome. The chances are so slim that his previous career was being a bmw mech while e30's were still in shops. Plus he helped me diagnose my car!

You guys ever met a cool cop? a cop that loves e30's?

Not an e30 lover per say but when I was getting arrested the cop, while on our way to the jail, tried his hardest to find out what my arrest warrant was for. Even after we couldn't figure it out he gave me great fatherly advise on how to avoid the vatos and niggas I was going to be hanging out with.

Edit: actually there was a time when I was driving with no license because I had to make it to class for a final or fail the class. On the way back the cop stopped me for accelerating on a yellow light. Even after checking my drivers license he came back and noticed I had a polish last name. He told me how to say some polish words so that he could win some arguments against his polish wife. If you've ever had polish women in your life you'd understand. I think he saw an empty weed jug in the car and just asked me if I was high at the moment, which I truthfully answered I did the night before. He just told me he hoped I passed, to smoke at home and not to drive and never mentioned anything about the license.

I live in CA so modifying your car is an issue considering smog. I've only ever had like three mentionables.

I was pulled over for not having a front license plate and instead of asking for my license and reg., the cop tells me to open my hood. I start sweating a little because the car is turbocharged which is a big no-no. I ask him if he wants me to step out with him and he replies saying, "why, are you going to run?". I already start suspecting that he is going to be hard on me, most likely issue me a state referee ticket, and ruin my day/week/year since that will make my car road-illegal and forcefully return it to stock to be checked for compliance .
He pokes around the engine bay and starts asking me questions which I answer honestly to except for the one where if these cars ever come turbocharged factory. I tell him there are some turbo diesel variants and try to sway the conversation towards another path. Towards the end he compliments my car, sends me off my merry way, and tells me to put my front plate back on :p I lost a gallon of water in sweat that day.

Another time while driving to work, an older gent in a new e92 M3 was pestering me on the 10 mile straight open road I take in the morning. Revving at me, pulling forward and back while cruising, and such. I finally bite into hit taunts and end up roll racing him on the road once, and another time from a stop light. We hit probably 90 or so on the streets until I backed off and he turned into a freeway on ramp where he was still WOT entering the freeway. I look in the rear view and see police lights approaching fast and think to myself, well shit - it's over. I pull into a gas station accepting that my car is going to get towed. Cop comes to my window and immediately starts yelling at me, which I deserve, and rhetorically asks me, "you know how fucking fast I had to drive to catch up to you two idiots?". I admit to him that I gave into M3's teasing and just went for it.
He runs my ID, pokes around the car, asks me why am I'm in a suit and where am I going? I tell him to work and I start in 15minutes. He explains to me all the tickets he's able to write me for and that he is allowed to impound my car at this point, which I know is true, but sends me off with a warning not to try that stunt ever again. :puppy: No ticket or anything.

Back in 2010, pre-turbo, I was driving neck in neck with my friend on a road at about 15mph. We are talking through the window about directions to an exhaust shop because he is driving open headers. I tell him to follow me and accelerate in front of him to get in his lane before the next stop light so he can follow me to make a left.
Long story short, I get pulled over with suspicion of street racing, detained, car searched, and get every ticket you can think of written up for me - modified exhaust, modified suspension, bald tires, contest to racing, speeding, and things I don't even remember. I admit I was being a little stubborn because I couldn't read ANYTHING he wrote on the ticket with his chicken scratch writing and he didn't want to explain to me what the citations were for before signing it. Anyways, after being let go, he tries to start talking "cars" with me, saying how he used to race old VW's or whatever. I'm trying to keep my cool because I honestly don't give a shit after what he did to me and end up fighting it in court, having all the citations dropped. Okay, he wasn't a cool cop - never mind.

I ran from the police in an e30 once.

I ended up getting arrested but the cop was pretty nice.

        Overall, I'd rate him a 9/10.

He saw us lined up from afar, and when I jumped ahead to get in front of him, he pulled out to pull me over - contest to racing. And yeah, all those tickets.

Everything was going pretty good until a tree came out of nowhere.

I went from 120+mph to 0mph real fast.

If I had the opportunity to do it again, I probably wouldn't do it again.

Cop bashing on here is frowned upon. I'll go ahead and clean it up now, but anymore bashing and I'll just start cleaning house.

                          Thank you.
There is a very bad rep about cops lately, and it is quite disappointing. I understand that not all cops are gentle old ladies, but they also have to keep their safety in mind. I have had enough cop experiences in regards to automotive issues and never once have I felt pissed after or that they did something wrong.
Got pulled over for a random reason by two cops, and they suspected drugs or alcohol and were very authoritative in what they were doing. I simply answered their questions and had nothing to hide. A bit later my friend and I and the two copswere standing by our cars talking about cars, new cop cars and one of the cops brothers STI's.
People have such a terrible attitude towards cops and treat them with so much disrespect, yet are up in arms when a cop says anything that isn't sugar coated.
Be respectful to them and they will most likely return the favor.

No problem. And also got to remember that we have members on here that are police, and also members that have family and friends that are police. I know there are bad apples in the law enforcement community. But to lump all of them together and just bash on them isn't needed here.

Timely topic. A good friend of mine is a police officer, I was at dunken donuts this morning getting a cup of coffee I was just about to leave when he pulled up behind my truck and we ended up Bsing for about 20 minutes.

He used to street race a lot when he was younger. He is in his late 20's now and I got him into Autocrossing. He almost bought my sons E30 325is then decided to buy a 318is instead, I warned him to drive it first, he did not listen. He sold it shortly after that. Not enough power for him.

He now has a New Mustang GT, next to a S2000 and he just sold a Civic SI and a Z06 just before that. He hates pulling over people speeding and prefers to pull over people driving like ass hats. He feels like a hypocrite writing a speeding ticket. A cooler car guy / cop you will not meet. His dad is a retired NYC cop and just as cool. More on them in a moment.

While we were talking an old lady walked up to him, shook his hand and thanked him for keeping us safe. I know him well, he hates sappy shit, I had to hide my laughter while it was going on. I guess there is a Thank a Cop campaign going on to counter all the anti cop crap that is going on.

My cousin is also a cop, I was taking my sons friend home a couple of months ago and broke down in the town where my cousin works. He saw us, and gave the kid and I a ride home in his brand new SUV Interceptor, we told that 10 y/o kid it will be is first and last ride in the back of a police car. LOL!!

Then he took me back to my truck and hung out with me while I waited for AAA. He offered to take me to the station a few times so I could be in A/C.

He used to race 1/4 mile all the time and is a car guy too. He likes pulling people over for speeding though, he lets a lot of car guys go with warnings but he told me I would be amazed how many people he pulls over with warrants for their arrest and / or no insurance (I hate that) or registration on the vehicle. He changed my tune on speed traps.

Here is my cousin hanging with me while broken down:

Back to my Friend and his dad a retired NYC Cop, here is his restored early 70's NYC police car, the same type of car he drove as a rookie. How cool is that?

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride! -Hunter S. Thompson
