What did you major in and would you do it again?

The common advice these days is to tell kids to go into engineering, but if I'm being honest with myself I couldn't make it in engineering school, just not cut out for it. I'm currently wrapping up my freshman year and getting gen-eds out of the way. I'm in econ, but havent taken any actual economics courses yet. So my question to the college graduates of r3v is this: what is your major and would you do it again if you had the chance?

I majored in Political Science and I wish I knew then what I know now because I would not pick it as my major if I had it to do all over. I was in college for a good time and a degree, should have just majored in leisure studies because I'm a Realtor now which doesn't require any degree.

I am 29 with no higher education. I am happy I never went to university, as I know what I would have picked would be useless to me now.

I would have done Mech engineering. But now all I care about is business, that is where the money is at, I am going to go back to school to study business, and strategic planning.

        Business grad, career in finance
If I had to do it again, I'd try to figure out a job actually making something. I love my job, but I really like working with tools.

I did my Gen Ed at Community College (AA), took a specific ecommerce related degree (ATA), got my BA in business / MIS, and then MBA. I am 2/3 the way through a doctoral program. If I were to do it again I'd be sorely tempted to simply get a BA. Maybe biological science or Chemical Engineering.

Undergrad in electrical/computer engineering, worked, then did grad school in business, through the years seemed to have made friends with a lot of fine arts people for some reason.

Would do all of that again.

Got: Business Admin degree focusing on Finance and Marketing

Wish I got: Performing arts degree

                Doing Now: Accounting.

Would I do it differently if I had the chance? Nope

communications degree in Radio/TV/Film concentration. Graduated mid 90's.
Yes: would do the same thing again.
Landed a freelance job on a TV show before graduation & did the freelance thing for a few years before getting more into the business side of TV production handling camera rentals. Almost 20 years later I still do rentals but also work on shows as video engineer and tech manager. Best gig ever. Constantly pushing to try new things, working in different locations all the time.

I majored in biology and just graduated last year. Im planning on going back for a PhD in the next year or so. The hardest part of a biology major is it takes so long to get to a point where youre specializing and doing the niche that you truly enjoy. Im at an entry level, not much thought needed job now and that makes me wish I could have went for mechanical engineering or similar where I would use my brain more often but I just keep telling myself, soon Ill get to be doing the research I want to lol.

I majored in Mechanical Engineering and I'm pretty happy with all the opportunities it has afforded me. If I had to do it all over again, I'd go back and do a Master's right away and then travel a bit before working....or I'd completely change direction and take a business major with a minor in marketing and social media.

Have a career area in mind when you begin higher education. Don't waste your time or money if your degree isn't going to give you an advantage in the job market/workplace. It's tough to pay off your loans when you're squeezing a bottle of Sweet Onion sauce for a living.

I always knew that I wanted to go to medical school, so that afforded me the luxury of majoring in Political Science (which is a worthless degree unless you specifically tailor your classes to prep you for law school or government work).

                            I did/do something very similar.

I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance. Now I work in the Advisory department of the 5th largest public accounting firm in the world and I absolutely hate it.

Very boring job. I get almost no satisfaction out of it. All I do is make sure companies are in compliance with various regulatory bodies and it sucks. I wish I had done something that benefits people more directly, not just make CEOs and shareholders happy by confirming that they play by the rules.

I am happy with my degree and this job because with both items on my resume I will never have a hard time finding a job. With that being said, I do not plan on staying in public accounting for more than another 17months (that will be the 2yr mark). From here I'm not 100% sure what I want to do, but I know it's not accounting. If teachers didn't get paid so poorly I would teach in a heartbeat - that's what I studied freshman/sophomore year and I loved it. Just couldn't stand the thought of scraping by for the next 20 years.

OP, my advise to you is to figure out how you would like to impact the world. Not in a revolutionary sense (unless that's your thing), but rather think of something you could do and at the end of the day look back on and feel accomplished/proud of. My biggest struggle right now is looking back on my days, knowing I did good work, but having no feelings about the purpose of my work.

I majored in 'Integrated Arts' after dropping out of the Architecture program after three years.

At first I was embarrassed and also felt like I wasted a lot of money but the truth is, I got a multidisciplinary degree and it has gotten me a few jobs, the one I'm in being a really good gig.

Do I regret it? Eh. I should have tried harder in school, but I'm happy now.
