Anyone ever worked an "asset protection" job?

A while back I started working at lawn and garden for walmart, not the best job but co-workers were chill and being outside was nice. I heard about "asset protection" which is watching cameras, stealthing on thieves in normal clothes, and better pay (barely). I got an interview and accepted the job today. Have any of you ever worked a job like this? Any tell tall signs someone is going to be dangerous? I am not expecting to get shot or something but who knows what one of the people we catch has to lose? I can't wait to start! I'm 18 btw, I think it's going to be funny when I catch some dude and he's like "yea kid you don't work here gtfo"

Understand that until they walk out the door, they haven't stolen anything.

Also, if you aren't sure, leave them alone.

IIRC Walmart theft prevention is severely limited. Which works in your favor to not end up in a serious confrontation over cheap Chinese shit.

Yea there are tons of policy things that are good for everyone involved. I'm really curious about what happens when the guy agrees to come with us to the office or wherever and then freaks out or something. I'm sure there will be some good stories to tell!

i would hate to do that job someplace you could not citizens arrest, or "persuade" them to stay, or ban them, when i was security at a Casino we could arrest, and we would tell them if they left, the officers on their way would consider it running and an extra charge would be added. more often then not it was middle aged women who stole shit, had some lady steal our slot techs. work bag with all his tools right on the floor even with 4 cameras watching her! we confronted her, with sheriffs waiting around the corner, she denied it then he came over and told her to open her bags. was a wonderful face she made!

also bottoms of strollers, women with large purses, diaper bags, sadly alot of men make their wives or GF take stuff for them.

I worked Loss Prevention at Best Buy way back in the day. Policy was to never detain anyone, the most we'd do is follow someone around the store asking them if they needed help with anything constantly. They'd leave the store.

They don't care about people stealing CD's.

What you're really there for is to catch other employees.

sad thing is if the companies actually paid their workers enough they would not want to steal from them.

OP, as long as you remember that you're not getting robbed and don't take walmart theft personally, you're good to go. no sense in getting hit or having a knife pulled on you for the walton family, especially when you're getting paid peanuts

^^^^ I like this, good thought process,

look up beer thieves at Walmart in Titusville FL, Manager chases them outside, they almost back into him, he hops in the bed of the truck to avoid being run over, chase ensues, Walmart fires him! all for riding in the bed of the truck, of course there's more to the story,

I read the policy online and it doesn't seem to hard to not get in trouble. Like Jalopi said, it's not worth it. Anyways, if we break the policy then we get fired. The base pay is $10.35/hr and 1.5x on sunday. Not horrible but not great either. $15/hr on sunday is going to be bank.

The store I worked at the asset protection guys were being paid off by thieves working the backroom. All got busted and went to jail after 3 or so years.

as far as guarding assets...my saddest feeling working minimum wage for the casino industry is walking into a room with millions of dollars in chips, currency, etc. and knowing you could actually get that out of the casino but how would you get away with it...(i had the ability to get into and out of the cage)

OP: i would just follow people around and bug them until they left, and or wait for the cops to show up(if you call them), if its an employee all you can do really is just wait to get them on tape and then go through the proper channels to get them fired.

How did you know they were thieves? During my interview we talked about the position and he said one of us would be walking around looking for stuff, and one of us would be on the cams. If one or the other saw something then we would radio the other and follow them until they left. Seems pretty sweet.

Did you have to wear a uniform? We don't and that's what I'm most stoked on

Yea in casinos they want a presence so we wore uniforms, pretty much the guys on the Cameras would watch stuff that was common areas then people on the ground would watch suspect people and tell cam guys to look at so and so and then on the ground guys would go approach if stuff was confirmed, then u just act innocent and ask how they are then they try to leave in your case be like BTW can we have our size 26 women's jeans and Nascar flip flops back? Then they deny it then u just bug them politely so they can't sue for harassment, until the give stuff back, cops show up or leave.

I so want to make a trip up North for the sole purpose of trolling OP while he's on duty.

You know, walk around shoving things into my pockets and such. Then start talking about E30's for a while. Once I'm convinced you have completely forgotten why you were talking to me in the first place, I'll close with a "Alright man, see you on R3V." Just to cement the deal and walk out, in style.

No. I saw all the theft, they asked me I I wanted anything but I knew it was trouble. The thieves stole a lot more than they admitted to. Great environment to be around.
