Lots of interesting stuff in here. They really don't care what year the car is, my dad is a subie fan and has a 2015 impreza hatch only because they stopped making a hatchie sti. They let me drive a 30 year old airbag-less car too So they don't care the year. And to them having an awd is a +1 for safety and everything, plus the mini may or may not still be unreliable as hell compared to our old subaru we had. Anyone in NE have some old cars at their dealer? Any private dealers? I would do CL and bring it to subaru but I'm not sure if my parent's would do that.

The newer ones are more reliable it seems.

Make sure an older one has had wheel bearings replaced and maybe the heads in recent service history.

Have to agree with this with regards to anything short of the STI. The WRX is a commuter car with a little extra power, you need the upgraded drivetrain and controlable center diff to actually get the most out of the platform.

They also don't tune nearly as well as people like to believe. Sure you can slap on a cobb accessport and make some extra power, but the same can be said for any turbo'd car. There are much better options for performance vehicles in the price range, with a lot more tuning potential. the EJ motor's reach a reliability ceiling very quickly.

What you mention there is ultimately why I ended up with the S4. I hear 300 whp is sketchy even on those cars.

S4 isn't a bad car, depreciation puts the subaru significantly ahead of the audi though.

300whp certainly isn't sketchy, thousands are running those power levels safely with a stage 2 setup. The issue arises when people start swapping turbos and shoot for the 400 level. This is a problem that would've been nullified had subaru used forged pistons from the get go, as ringland failure is the biggest concern.

Very true. I would love to have 300whp but mine is a stock fun winter car. It's my winter blues getaway. I considered the s4 but was afraid of the repairs. I enjoy working on cars but I'm a little intimidated when it comes to Audi.

i used to talk a lot of shit on wrxs before owning one too. after taking mine from 302,000 to 316,000 miles in less than a year i have to assume people who think they're cheaply made crapboxes have never owned one or just have exquisite taste that the rest of us wouldn't understand.

it IS a commuter car with extra power. that's the entire point. OP is looking for a daily to supplement his e30, not a racecar.

something like a B6 S4 is probably faster and cooler but the reliability is null and cost of ownership on those is immense compared to a subaru.

B6 S4's are worse than the B5. Look up a timing chain job. The guides are known to wear out.

I've researched it heavily, I almost flew to somewhere in Oregon to buy one a while back but I couldn't justify the risk of a car like that. Turbo Subaru is fun and reliable. I also don't have to feel bad when I wanna off-road a little or blow through snow banks or puddles because it's just another subaru. I decided I wanted that kind of daily driver rather than something nicer and more prone to being a pain in my ass
