I just made the plunge back into boat ownership. 1991 Supra Sunsport. When it was developed, it was supposed to be a ski boat, which by all accounts it was, however it was much bigger and heavier than its competition. Fast forward a few years to when wake boarding and wake surfing gained popularity and now the big heavy ski boat is a winner. It's the best entry-level price wake board boat I think one could buy.
I was fortunate enough to have the chance to sail aboard the Schooner Mayan for the race. We ended up winning our class in a very dramatic way. 3 boats all making a run for the finish line in a photo finish. It was epic.
A big thank you to Beau Vrolyk for the opportunity to sail aboard Mayan for this. Another thank you to all the owners and crews for coming out and making this a great race.
A couple of videos taken aboard Mayan. The first is the beginning of the Master Mariners Race, I'm the guy in the white shirt with a black hat, vest and shorts that can be seen on the right side at 1:30 and various times after that.
This one was from the voyage from Santa Cruz down to LA last week. I was not aboard. 40 kt winds gusting to 50+kts. I think that was a wet and wild ride.
Very cool - that wave got everyone's attention for sure.
The main sheet, is it not on a winch? Seems like it was hard to get pulled in.
No, the main is not on a winch. That made for an exciting time during the Master Mariners race where we had to tack away to avoid a collision with another boat who was on port tack and not paying attention. We fouled the boom in the backstay, requiring us to pull a 360 to clear that, fouling the jib around the forestay, requiring another 360. It could have been all kinds of bad.
Part of the reason Mayan went down to LA was to be fitted with winches for the main.
Yes that wave got everyone's attention. With the winds howling at that speed they were running a storm jib and still making 8-10 kts through the water. The boat doesn't surf, it just falls down the face of the waves so that makes things even more tricky. (Odd since its a wide boat and a shallow draft. Its also a very stiff boat. I'd think it would surf very well, but it might just be too heavy.)
I have a 101 questions. But what do you mean by a "stiff boat" - as in the haul is physically strong(standing rigging, ect), or how it rides the waves?

Yes, the hull is quite solid, and the boat is quite heavy, 70,000 lbs.
This doc was just released today. It follows a guy that gave up on normal life, bought a sailboat with no experience, and sails around the world. Crazy story, fun, and amazing. It's more then an hour long, but worth it IMHO.
If you can make it 20 mins in, you'll be hooked.
