Anyone have any experience with planning a trip for the purpose of volunteering? I have done a Habitat for Humanity trip years ago and now I am trying to plan something similar with the girlfriend.

Most counties have a Habitat for Humanity office. Get on their website and find out who your local rep is. Give them a call and usually you can show up at one of their job sites and help out fairly quickly after making contact. You may have to watch a safety video before hand and sign an injury waiver.
I've organized Habitat for Humanity trips for the high school that I work at and it's usually really easy to set up, especially if it's just you and your girlfriend. -
